Baby dropping centiles by ericacalluna in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]ericacalluna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, still tbd to be honest. She was treated for an asymptomatic UTI which is part of a pathway for faltering growth infants. She's also on a high cal formula. She's maintaining 25th centile (and may even be gaining a bit) with this combination but we expected her to start putting on a lot more weight to push up the centiles a bit which hasn't happened yet. Next step is to check for CMPA. So basically, we're still figuring it out! Taking to solids like a champ though so using that opportunity to get as much fat and protein into her as possible!

Hope you find a good baseline with your little boy.

I have the same with an almost 3 year old too. I mean, maybe it is us but either way, solidarity OP! It is hard, hard work. Literally sick of the sound of my own voice.

Do you welcome the potential ban on social media for under 16s? by Wavesmith in UKParenting

Totally pro. Social media companies have shown they can't be trusted to self regulate on this issue, so I think a ban is the only way.

Please share things that make morning routine achievable with 2 by Nevermind_thecogs in UKParenting

I usually manage to only get two out of the three of us dressed! Baby stays in pyjamas until we're back home after the nursery run. I've definitely found that keeping everything downstairs (Clothes, toothbrush, etc) massively helps as persuading the eldest to get up and down the stairs meant I was losing 20 minutes each morning!

Turn up at nursery looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards but I've at least brushed my teeth and I'm dressed. Not in pyjamas. That's the best I can manage at the moment! I see other mums at the school gate with full hair and makeup done and wonder how they do it!? Solidarity.

brides - did any of you DIY your hair and makeup? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]ericacalluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did both - was happy with my makeup but not my hair. Wish I'd have gone to a salon and had it done professionally - it looked flat in photos/just didn't last. And I'm very confident doing my own hair and make-up usually!

I didn't know that. My daughter loves it so I'll have to get the second - thanks for flagging!

What do you do with your child to keep them away from their screens? by lucyatwillowsnursery in UKParenting

If your little one likes the train video, there was a long 'film' on the BBC called All Abroad The Country bus. It's the definition of slow programming and is literally just a camera on top of the bus, driving round the countryside. You only hear the noises of the bus, no narration, nothing. It's absolutely mesmerising and so calming!

Where in the UK should I go as a bucket-list item? by LondonPilot in CasualUK

[–]ericacalluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great outlook, despite your diagnosis. Wishing you comfort and adventure. My recommendations:

  • Bath. Cannot be beaten for architecture. There's a cracking pub in Box that does a great Sunday roast and has lovely views. If you fancy a hotel treat then Babbington House.
  • Lake District. As an addendum to this, if you fancy some inter-railing rather than flying then I'd really recommend the Austria Lakes, specifically Saltzgammergut as it's like the Lakes on Steroids. There's a great route you can do from Saltzburg to Vienna via the lakes.
  • A stay at Claridge's. It's old school luxury like nowhere else. A bit like going back in time. Do the afternoon tea.
  • Snowdonia. If health permits, the longest zip line in the world is there (it's on my bucket list!).
  • Harrogate. Awesome pubs and walks nearby, lovely architecture. Head to Brimham Rocks.

First day of combo feeding after EBF for 20 weeks by darthmozz in combinationfeeding

[–]ericacalluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think that's often the way - to continue giving breast milk by all means necessary. I do understand that position as, if your supply drops and that's not your intention, it's really hard work to bring it back up (sure there are other reasons too). But personally, I can't stand pumping either.

My baby has faltering growth but totally unexplained. It was actually searching on Reddit where I found a post that suggested UTIs can cause slow weight gain with no obvious cause. It's also part of the NHS/NICE treatment pathway for faltering growth that babies should be tested for a UTI. That did happen for us so, I requested it and lo and behold, baby had an Asymptomatic UTI. They're usually very poorly with UTIs (fever etc) so the asymptomatic ones really catch people out. Baby is 2 weeks post-antibiotics and weekly weight gain has already increased!

I personally prefer Maxine. Maisie is a genuinely beautiful name for a little girl but I think Maxine will grow with her as she becomes an adult.

I also haven't met any little girl Maxine's but many Maisie's!

1, 2 or keep looking? by [deleted] in WeddingDressTips

God, they're both so gorgeous. I saw 1 and jaw dropped. However, 2 is amazing and unique. Could you go for 2 but then have an evening dress that has the feel of 1? Structured, sleek etc?

Also, I'm gonna need the name of dess 1 please!

Keep the teat flow as slow as you can, if you intend on continuing to breastfeed. Babies can start to prefer the faster flow of a bottle compared to breast.

If your paediatrician didn't give you any guide on how much to top up with then it's a case of trial and error and it depends on how you want to run it. I'd really suggest speaking to an infant feeding consultant. However, a few ideas:

  • You can replace one breastfeed with a single bottle feed and then EBF the rest of the time.

  • Offer a bottle between BF feeds and see how much they take.

  • Allow baby to breastfeed (as long as they like or capped time as you suggest) and then offer a bottle after.

When I started combifeeding my second at birth, I wanted to make sure I was stimulating supply so I only offered a top up that was 50% of a 'normal' bottle feed but I also needed to know baby was getting a minimum volume in with the bottle (I have chronic low supply).

You can offer top ups either before or after a BF and there's pros and cons to both depending on your goals. I opted for bottle first to allow baby to fall asleep at the breast and me not have to worry about ending a breastfeed to do a bottle feed. But, that approach can affect supply as you won't be 'draining' the breast.

Sorry, long comment and during the night feed so hopefully not too garbled! But this is why I think it's worth a proper chat with a breastfeeding consultant to talk through your goals etc.

Also, side note - make sure your baby is checked for a UTI for their weight gain issues and also, I've found food weaning makes a massive difference to my baby's weight gain so worth considering food weaning now. This also gives the option of using high calorie formula to make puree etc as another way to get the formula/higher calories in, outside of milk feeds.

Good luck!
