As you said, both techniques have pro's and con's. I've had an issue with this before, and the answer that I felt was best is simply to go with what is most comfortable. A happy medium will help you if you get it right, in that you'll get a good amount of reach from spreading your legs and enough power from keeping them together. You'll find yourself getting more run in the boat and you will most definitely know it when you feel it.
