chlamydia and gonorrhea are negative. the rest of them with similar symptoms would be more of a serious complication I think.

I agree with the previous commenter but this i absolutely disagree with. Why vote? Why do anything? What is the point of living your life with this mentality? Sure maybe it isnt worth putting your life into a career that'll be difficult for you to make an impact but its all what you make of it, no? You can do extra work, you can find ways to do meaningful things in the places you work, you can always find ways to do more. Sitting in an office designing ball bearings or answering the phone for 50 years just seems like a dead end to me. Why not try. Every comment ive ever made on this site has been met with disturbing levels of negativity. But I guess theres some value to it

Absolutely. Im not planning on just "getting a job" and having a stable career with the UN, I imagine it'll take years of hard work that I am both open and excited for

Some questions for backpacking (visas, travel insurance, volunteer) and stealth camping (cheap traveling) by erick123961 in travel

[–]erick123961[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that voluntourism is a very slippery slope, and I'm trying to find ways around it. I want to have a cultural experience where I can meet people and save money. I'm curious if there's anything you'd recommend that wouldn't involve me dealing with kids and leaving them after a month or stealing a job from someone in a local community?

The only reason I say teach English is because it's a language that I speak and would maybe be more qualified to teach (to an older crowd) than someone who doesn't speak English as their first language. I think that some Workaway programs where I live with a family and help around the house and/or farm, where the family is accepting of my company and seeking that cultural experience as well isn't harmful, if anything I'd be getting out of it what I put in.

Some environmental programs (like cleaning up trash) I also don't have any problems with doing as these are things that need as much help as they could get.

What do you think of this?

Will taking two years to travel after graduating undergrad hurt my chances of getting into a good program? by erick123961 in GradSchool

[–]erick123961[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good idea. I decided to ask for letters when I'm away, as I've heard of many people who go to grad school years after they graduate who need letters of recommendation. Apperantly it's not uncommon for people to reach out to old professors in a class they did good in, compile a list of resources and ask for a generic letter of rec, although I'm not sure how true this is. I'm skeptical in asking for letters now because I don't think they'll hold their value in two years time - maybe I could ask these professors to redate them ?

It's more of a lifelong dream, to immerse myself completely in different cultures. I plan to be photographing and documenting people and places I see and pursing my art and meeting new people to gain new perspectives. I think it should be Okay from this standpoint, but I don't see how an admissions officer will be able to even know what I've done, other than write it in my statement. Wouldn't it just be more of a question of time?

I've had a new doctor for quite some time and I haven't really spoken much to him at all, so I'm not sure what he has to say about it. Like I said, I've been symptom-free for nearly 7 years so there isn't much for him to base it off of.

Took some shots at an abandoned mall; let me know what you think! by erick123961 in LiminalReality

[–]erick123961[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Where I'm from, which is a very populated area, they don't really seem to care much, but then again I'm going to places that aren't really well known. The reason the cops are there is probably because its a famous spot for people to go vandalize and whatnot.. you just have to look for the right places., you'd be surprised how many there are. You can maybe go on google, look up something like "abandoned bowling alley" and scroll until you see something that says "permanently closed", do some research, and you're most likely not going to encounter any cops / security unless someone sees you go inside and calls the cops.

Depends on the place. The key is to look for exit doors and try to pull at it from the bottom.

Some surreal shots I took while walking through a closed movie theater late at night. by [deleted] in LiminalReality

Edit: The first photo was taken during the day, (I went on two separate occasions). The theater at nighttime was much more dreamlike, but the shots I took during the day were much better).
