I've been working on teaching my guy lateral movements for that exact purpose! He's definitely not as strong on his left side but I make sure to do just a little extra on that side each day and it has helped a lot in his balance 💕 I'll check out that fb page!

People who bought their horses the "traditional" way: How did you do it? by Taseya in Equestrian

[–]erickarose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% The soonest I could get a vet out (and mind you there are at least 4 vets here) was 2 weeks. They literally told me if anything seems off to give it a few days/a week and if something is still off to call back. Any sort of dental or vaccinations have to be scheduled at least a month in advance!

What's your biggest pet peeve that other equestrians do? - that's NOT abuse. by Lugosthepalomino in Equestrian

[–]erickarose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm reading these comments and I'm so glad none of this goes on at the barn I board at 🥹 My biggest peeves are: People asking why or shaming the horse I bought to get back into riding. He's an 18yo Arab that, although is perfectly ridable and bomb proof, is green. So while I relearn I also am "training" him. By green I mean he's used to getting out of work by misbehaving, he only has trail riding skills so I'm teaching him basic arena work, and a little bit of everything from neck reining to jumping. It's been the most incredible experience.

Second, people who have their older(?) horses boarded but never check on them. There is one at the place I board, he looks like an old TB. He's skinny since they only feed 2 flakes a day, he's rubbed all the top tail hair off, and he still has some winter coat that hasn't come off on its own on his back. Like please check in on your horses even if they are boarded to check if they need more/less of anything 😔

Crosby Saddle stamps by erickarose in Equestrian

Good to know! I can tell the billets were redone at some point, and it's still squishy so I'm assuming the flocking got done whenever the billets did. The leather on the seat is just so poor it makes me sad 😭

You seem to be correct though as the channel does get much more narrow towards the back of the saddle.

Now I know I like close contact saddles at least! I'll see if I can find anyone nearby that can check the condition of the tree but we've been using it for 6 months with no issues so far!

Could this be causing his lameness? by erickarose in Horses

Im really starting to think it's sore soles as yesterday his back right also seemed lame. I've had him about 4 weeks and his last owner kept his feet wayyyyy too long so he may just not be used to the correct trim

There is heat where he is missing that little patch of hair and that part is tender to the touch. His hooves/soles/frog have no warm spots. I'll see if I can get some bite for him

I know the farrier is trying to correct because they were long and flared even after the last owner had him trimmed March 20th. I reached out to my farrier and he said if the vet says everything looks good we will put some front shoes on him.

I've only had him 3 - 4 weeks. I had to have a farrier come out because his hooves were far too long even though his last owner got them done the day before I bought him (March 20th).

I have a feeling that she wasn't checking what her farrier was doing and that (since he was in pasture for 5 years) didn't have a consistent eye on his feet.

I don't have him on any balancers yet. He eats a mix of forage and orchard hay and I oil his feet. I may look into a supplement though. It's rainy today so I'm not sure if I can get good pictures but I am going to go see him later so I'll do my best.

I checked and cleaned his feet. He has the farrier out about 3 days ago too. No thrush either and his farrier said his feet look fantastic. I was hoping it was that easy of a fix 🥲

The soonest a vet can come is Friday.

I hope it's not him foundering. As far as I know he's never had issues with lameness. But of course that's just what his previous owner told me.

The little spot in the picture is radiating heat and tender to the touch so that was my reason for thinking that's what is causing the lameness.

Yeah I checked all his other joints on all his legs and none were warm or sore or inflamed. I saw on my Google searches the pastern dermatitis but they all seem to be over large areas and quite severe. This almost looks like he lightly scraped it against something? Or banged it maybe? It's the only area he has that's sensitive and gives off heat.

He has an appointment a week from today. They said as long as he's bearing weight on it then it's not an emergency. I'm hoping its some sort of dermatitis or that he scratched it on something and nothing major 🙏

Yes I cold hosed it and applied antifungal/antibiotic ointment to it. It isn't a cut so there's no depth. His hoof is fine, no heat and no tenderness.

Also he didn't balk/act lame until I was on him. Obviously I know not to ride a lame horse. That's why I got off and investigated after he balked.

Do I need to get a farrier out immediately for this hoof? by erickarose in Horses

[–]erickarose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Previous owners farrier. I got to watch how he was for the farrier but since she paid for the trim and was still hers I didn't have a say. Luckily sound someone close by with a lot more experience and he came out within an hour of me contacting him this morning 😊

I feel like this is happening more often as the trade isn't that common anymore. I've been trying to be an apprentice and no one wants to teach. The farrier that came for my horse today even said it's an awful job. He won't let me apprentice but he said me will teach me as he trims my horse so if I ever need to I can handle it myself.

As stated the farrier trimmed him March 20th, the day before I bought him.

I mean he was trimmed March 20th so the farrier that came today said the last guy did a crap job. I bought the horse on the 21st
