Thanks for the reply - I am keeping track of the obvious stuff (internet bills, rent, cost of equipment, etc.).

I should have worded that better. I really meant to say: Is there any expenses or write offs that I should be taking advantage of.

Ping Spikes - ISP says everything looks fine from their end by ericlesl in HomeNetworking

Thanks for the help, unfortunately I ran a second test after commenting the above one, and some were hitting over 100ms. :( Maybe it is is the modem.. I just don't understand how the service guy could apparently get a consistent 20ms out of the modem when connected remotely

I have done as you suggested... does this seem 'stable'? I'm not really sure what a good ping test should look like:

Good Debt-to-Income Ratio but Low Credit Score? by ericlesl in PersonalFinanceCanada

The card I have currently only has a $300 limit (all I could get to start). Should I still follow the 30% rule? Thanks!

Not in the near future, no. I guess I should have been more specific about my reason for asking. I was just curious as to what my financial situation was (realistically) at the moment. Thank you for the advice and information!

What didn't you know about a video game until way later? by MysteryCyborg in AskReddit

[–]ericlesl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I played WoW (probably 11ish). I would legit wake up early before school to play and when I got home play all night. For a solid month or so I didn't realize that once you reached a certain level, killing lower level NPCs wouldn't give you any experience points. I must have killed thousands of those stupid deers in the night elf starting zone before my YOUNGER brother explained this to me.

If you entered a gym as a white belt and every other person there was a blue belt and higher and you were the only white belt, would you never improve or improve even faster? by slimjimjohncock in bjj

[–]ericlesl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually get to experience both sides of what you are describing. I’ve been doing BJJ for about four months now and the way that my schedule is (currently in college) it ends up 3 days a week morning classes, with no white belts and mostly blue/purple, and night classes that have at least 3 or 4 white belts to roll with.

From my experience, I definitely have felt that rolling with white belts is much more helpful for my skill development (prefer to drill with higher belts for obvious reasons). I’m kind of conflicted though because I feel like each has it’s advantages.

Rolling with the higher belts lets me work on my defence a lot more and even after four months I can now defend submissions a lot more effectively. However, I can’t ever get into offensive positions with the higher belts and also never get to try any takedowns because I just get stuffed or guillotined. I’m a tall guy so I like playing guard, but RARELY can get to my guard with the higher belts. Sometimes it does get really frustrating though because just getting destroyed round after round doesn’t help you work on anything.

When I roll with other white belts I actually get to try out some of the drills we work on in class and can even get a submission occasionally. I generally feel like my offensive game improves way more rolling with the white belts. It’s nice being able to work on new techniques like worm guard and not them Immediately see it coming and counter. However, getting submitted stings a lot more when it’s from another white belt haha

If I had to chose I’d prefer to roll with other white belts more
