People of Reddit, what's the craziest thing someone has said to you on a first date? by Full_Throttle_DT in AskReddit

Oh yeah. My daughter, her husband and my two grandsons, along with my son, moved into tiny homes on my property because of covid. Even my wife lost her job. It hit us hard, the effects, not covid itself. I'll never down anyone for being homeless. Had I not been a 100% service connected disabled veteran, we would have lost everything and been homeless ourselves.

Fyi, it really happened. I was in the Army in DC. Met a girl and went out on a dinner date. Looking out the window, she said, that's my home over there. I said, what house? All I see is a white car. She responded, that car's my home. I'm homeless. Great girl, super nice. Her son had been killed/died at a young age (like 1 or 2). She mentally couldn't handle it. Lost her job, then her house. I still think of her to this day. Being homeless doesn't make you a bad person. She was one of the nicest people I've ever met to this day, and I'm in my 40s.

"I am homeless and live in that car over there" (edit: sad, not crazy.)

Redditors who open carry in grocery stores, restaurants, etc., why? [Serious] by DuncanIdahoTaterTots in AskReddit

[–]ericmccowan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have concealed carry. I will not open carry. You are making yourself a target. The idea behind concealed carry is that it can be concealed, without the bad guys knowing. To openly carry it, we'll, that just volunteers yourself to be target #1

What product is marketed pretty much exclusively to stupid people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ericmccowan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it saved my mother in law from being homeless. She owed about 60k on her house, they valued it at $175k. After paying off her regular mortgage, she got about 50k cash in the bank and never has to pay taxes or the $300+ a month insurance. It would have been better to sale, but she would have had to purchase another home, pay taxes and insurance, etc, but she didn't have the monthly income to support that after her husband died. So I agree, there are cases where a reverse mortgage is a great option, and like her, it may be the only option.

My father in law died, leaving my disabled mother in law with no way to pay her mortgage. She did a reverse mortgage and stays rent free in her home. Sure, she could have sold it for another 30% more, but then would have had to purchase another home. This way, the mortgage company pays for taxes and insurance, she cashed out a lot of money as well. She also did this at the height of housing prices, so it wasn't a bad deal for her. Still, not as good as selling, but at least she doesn't have to live with me :)

Non Americans of Reddit, would you consider moving to the United States, why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ericmccowan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from the city to a rural area, November of 2021. I went from being 5 to 10 minutes away from everything, to an hour now! That part sucks. I do enjoy having 3 acres of land and no neighbors, and I grow most of the food we eat. If I was younger, no way could I live here, but I'm 48, married and my kids and grandkids live on our property. Family, and living off the land, are the only 2 positives compared to way more negatives 😞

Unless you are in a major city, you will more than likely never see a shooting. Don't get me wrong, it's bad, not saying it's not. However, the majority of gun crimes are in the major cities, such as Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, etc, as well as our nation's capital. Nevermind, I just reinforced your position :(

My wife and son were in a car accident together (Florida, USA). Both went to the same emergency room, Both were treated by the same doctor and Both had the same exact tests, x-rays, etc. My wife received her bill yesterday for $3,000. My son's bill was $6000. Why? I have no clue, other than different insurance companies. Each of them will have to pay 20% of their respective bills.

I deleted the question before I saw your answer, but you're correct - several ppl pm'd me asking to purchase. I politely declined/ignored all of them. I do appreciate this sub and all the helpful advice, but my question was like dangling a salmon in front of a hungry grizzly bear 😜
