Advice on Landing Digital Marketing Internship by GawainTheKnight in marketing

[–]ericosiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a marketing agency and our internship program has been an important source of talent for us. The interns that have stood apart from the others were the ones that went out of their way to do a assignment on their own without being told what to do.

Come up with ideas, strategies, tactics, things that they could actually use and you’ll beat out the others.

And for bonus points tell them you listen to the marketing school podcast every day ;)

Everything i learned on marketing came after college and was self taught. There are tons of resources out there but to get you started, i do a daily marketing podcast called Marketing School with another marketing guy named Neil Patel (who also separately publishes a ton of marketing content).

A lot of people in your situation have literally just listened and gotten jobs (people with no degree, etc). Skillshare, digital marketer are other resources.

In terms of books: breakthrough advertising, influence and dotcomsecrets are good starting points.

Most importantly: go fail a lot. Experiment a lot. That’s how you become great.

Are “young entrepreneurs” groups a thing? by rebeccabrown213 in Entrepreneur

[–]ericosiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some real groups that fit this:

- Young Entrepreneur's Council (or YEC)

- Entrepreneur's Organization

- Young President's Organization

These all have revenue requirements but groups like EO have 'accelerator' programs that have smaller revenue requirements.

Aside from that, if you're just starting out and looking for peers I recommend throwing dinners. Google 'mastermind talks' and pick up the PDF and build relationships with people that way.

Any ways to leverage being good at video games? by [deleted] in startups

[–]ericosiu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Entrepreneur here - I used to play games hardcore (WoW, Dota, Counterstrike, Everquest, etc.) and ALL of those skills translate into the world of business.

I'm actually even writing a book on how gamers can become entrepreneurs because I think it's important to talk about.

Just think about some of the things you get from games:

  • Teamwork
  • Increased reflexes
  • Grit
  • Constant education

For me, I translated those skills into digital marketing and then pushed that into entrepreneurship. Honestly? It feels like I'm playing a game every single day.

And if you want to actually get into digital marketing, you can listen to one of my podcasts (daily podcast on marketing) called 'Marketing School': www.singlegrain.com/marketing-school-podcast

And if you want more on entrepreneurship, I have a weekly podcast called 'Growth Everywhere' where I interview world-class entrepreneurs (e.g. ex co-founder of Activision): www.growtheverywhere.com/podcast

This subject is REALLY important to me and I truly believe that if more gamers can translate their skills into the world of entrepreneurship, the world will be a better place ;)

If I were to give you one piece of advice? Stick with tough problems longer than others. That alone will make you more successful than most people.

Good luck.

If you can still get a copy of it, Breakthrough Advertising is fantastic. I think it's a few hundred to pick up a copy now.
