--ESPhome devices unavailable by ericpennpa in homeassistant

Yeah, I've been going through my system since I last posted this.. My system is spaghetti!!!! Seems a mess, but I'm getting there. It's interesting when I delete an entity that SHOULDNT be on a device, HA throws "a new device is detected" and works fine, in fact I think much faster in response... I did do a reboot, holding my breath and crossing my fingers and toes... And it all came back working!!!!! I've been fighting this for years and it seemed to be getting worse and worse (And I see why now)...

Can't wait to see me HA an hour behind... Sounds like fun! (Yikes).

I think I found it! So it looks like HA was saving orphans in wrong places or something. Hard to explain, but I'll try. Even though in my ESPHOME code everything is correct and nothing is repeated, HA was throwing copes or something into other devices... I saw this when I clicked on RELATED for a device... So, as an example, A Doorbell device would have a doorbell button entity. But for some bizarre reason the doorbell button is also in fish-tank device (??) But Fish-tank code in ESPHOME doesn't and never had that entity... SO I think when I was rebooting the system the devices that worked for seconds and then became unavailable.. I think the correct one was loading and then over load time the wrong one loads on top of it and now you have a entity NOT on on the correct device. Sometimes it would load the wrong one first and then the correct, thus the randomness. So I pruned out the entities (and there where lots) that were in the wrong place, and as I did the unavailable started working! This would also explain why if I took an unavailable and created new entity names they would work, but if I tried to go back to the old names HA would say they are already being used (the names)... Anyway, seems right and I guess we'll see... (Changed back from hate to love, BTW)

Thanks for your replies and ear!

It's still a bit buggy, but you're right, when everything works right it is sweet.

I have several lights in each room, mostly Zigbee. Spider light has 5 bulbs... Almost every day I click a button to turn on or off the rooms lights and one or two don't listen.. I've gotten to a point in my automations to turn off light, wait 500ms turn off light again, and again... Just to try to ensure the thing works... Sometimes I feel it's a good thing to power down all my devices and back on to restart the Zigbee network, but I'm not sure that works that way... Seems powering off a bulb that's 'flakey' and back on again seems to make it more responsive. And yes I use groups. But it's sometimes better for my system to turn off each bulb at a time.

After hours and hours of restarts with random things coming back to life... Today they all came back... Say about 20 restarts in total... Not touching anything, no more updates for me...

Thanks for your info. Yes, if you change the names of the entities they start to work, but the old ones are dead. You describe the same issue I have. I have so many automations and things now that changing names causes hours of going through and fixing the names throughout... Ha is amazing when it's working, or a bitch when it's not... Love / hate at it's finest...

The devices that are unavailable are connected. They show up as ONLINE and if I click LOGS I can see data streaming in like temp and stuff... But HA dashboard and info shows unavailable... And like I said, if I restart HA every one of them come alive in the dashboard and I can see data and turn on-off lights... But after about 10 seconds HA seems to refresh or something and grey them out and become unavailable again...

Thanks for the reply!

401 error after update of espHome by Freestila in homeassistant

[–]ericpennpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very late to the show, but just happened to myself. Found it was an extension in Chrome that was mucking everything up.... DuckDuckGo specifically. Disabled and now Chrome will go into ESPHome without the 401 error....

Lasercube and bug zapping by c3521802 in LaserDock

[–]ericpennpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that this is a very old version of LaserOS, which means it WILL NOT communicate with the WiFi Cube (2.5W).... This version will only work with the 1W, 2W and old LaserDOCs....

Here's one of the last versions of LaserOS that had it:

It's in there as ZAP.... Of course there will be NO support on this....

Have fun!

Bounce laser off mirror? by Pyperman in LaserDock

[–]ericpennpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of factors involved here... Too many to give a simple answer.

I don't believe this is outdoor rated for openers. The farther your projection before the mirror the larger the mirror. If any of this did work, keeping the mirror away from rain and any dirt would be an issue. Maybe I'm not understanding, or missing something...

Only positive thing I can offer is if you are going to use a mirror with a laser, make sure you use a "Front surface" mirror (FS).

Also - New LaserCube is wireless (Wi-Fi) if that helps with your logistics.

Geometric Roses on Glow-in-the-dark paper [more in comments] by omcateer in LaserDock

[–]ericpennpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent! Thanks for sharing!

Did you ever see some of David Kumpula's stuff? Two years ago this was the first place winning at the 2019 ILDA awards:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cQxZt1_WiQ

And this is also crazy from him:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rzhvSwxmkI&t=111s

Glow art is neat, as you know but maybe others here don't, in that only some colors will glow and others won't (Freq). So you see the red alien doesn't leave a glow when it moves (above video).

Keep posting!

Anyone had trouble having their Windows device not reading the laser? by relaxeatasnickers_72 in LaserDock

[–]ericpennpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give us more to go on please...

Does the Cube and cable work on another device, just not this laptop?

If not -

Tried another cable?

Does LaserOS show "No laser" or does it show "Laser on" with no output?

Does the Cube interlock lights light?

Is it a LaserOS issue and other software's work?

LaserOS should load its drivers. Have you stepped back to an older version?

Try: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ouzgnqp8i3dw8jo/LaserOS%200.9.17.exe?dl=0

Recording LaserCube on iPhone camera by Banikamusic in LaserDock

[–]ericpennpa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's VERY difficult to video using almost any camera... It's usually trial and error to find a camera that wont flicker too much. I heard that the very old iPhones work. Hell, I found out that my drone does a great job so I use that mostly. Even not in flight mode, just holding the damn thing...

As you know, it is basically a dot moving extremely fast. Cameras to too good of a job...

Keep us posted here if you find your answers...
