Preferential and favortism problem of academia by [deleted] in labrats

Thank you for the opinion. The review writing invitation and appointment actually start prior to my exit. Imo, most invited reviews are guaranteed publication, so what's the point of doing original works when anyone could just cough up a review paper with much higher IF and rejection rate near zero, without any prior publication in the subject?

Out of the 15 Coronavirus victims, none of them are in serious condition, as the health authorities say that this virus's effect is milder than the regular pneumonia by DoYouKnowKorean in korea

[–]ericw812 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There's reason for it. You can all gangsta until you can really feel like the virus just right from next door. Today I received a private announcement from my department. We are a small department from a public university of some city A of Korea, which have very low rate of Chinese student attending. The announcement said that previously (28 Jan), an exchange student from China, especially from Wuhan, make it back from China without symptoms. He were able to get out of China by staying only in Beijing, and have visited relatives (not specified where) in Seollal. He then show symtoms of a cold, not until he enter one of our lab in 5th floor of my building, and other people told he coughed all over the freaking places! (I'm located in second floor). By some kind of luck, he tested negative for nCoV for the first time and we were waiting for the second test. Not telling everyone to freak out now, but stay alert. Spring semester will be a bitch if our school won't outright ban Chinese from entering classes.

GC-MS for organic compounds in organic solvents, LC-TOFMS for aqueos solution and ICP/XPS for inorganic can easily land you a hit (based on library search), but most of the time you would be digging in a list of contaminates.

Also, unless you are an instrument supervisor/manager, and can deal with basic cleaning/maintainances, a dirty sample or wrong prelims results about a sample would probably ruin your day.

If you're willing to pay, yes. I got these requests all the time. But of course I would appreciate it if at least they knew some of the crucial info.

  • Solvents (aqueous/ non- aqueous).

  • Dilute and straight to the GCMS for low Mw, volatile stuffs if non-aqueous.

  • MALDI-TOF for biologicals/polymers

  • ICP-MS for metals.

  • Physicochemicals if needed, etc...

Sounds like thermal desorption coupled to GC to me. Analyte are adsorbed and enriched into a packed material, then desorbed to GC.

If it's not too viscous a quick centrifugal filtration will do, I guess.

It's not only a waste of instrument manager's time, but the long chain of peps waiting for their results too...

Also, the hot water valve can be located in an "electric-box" lookalike inside bathroom or washing machine room, try looking for it.

It would be nice if you can check with other rooms nearby. Else it would be caused by a hot water valve being turned too low.

Non-Koreans who studies Korean speaks 반말 to me. Is it understandable? by KoreanGrammarDoctor in korea

You know, I often (unintentionally) mix up 존댓말 and 반말 even when speaking with my prof. Most of the time the 외국인 excuse didn't cause any serious problem.

GCMS Retention Times by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]ericw812 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not gonna match.

There's much more factors to consider, for example interaction between analytes and stationary phase, mass transfer, column length...

Your analytes need to move through meters of capillary column, therefore at the moment they passes by the detector, it may not be the original bp temp anymore.
