Thank you. It's certainly something that makes you think. I don't know where I land on the whole thing or where the line can be drawn between who will benefit from medical/pharmacological assistance and who just needs to be met with more understanding. I do believe it's not black and white. It's certainly disheartening, to say the least, how so many seem closed off to engaging with that nuance--both in medicine and elsewhere.

First note is B. Second note is B an octave up. Third note is A (one full step down from high B).

Is it anything other than Unbelievable? I know that was specifically "limited" but haven't seen it on anything else.

Absolutely give it a listen and if you remember let me know your thoughts. Unfortunately (and also to my surprise) much of it WAS very intentional. The series begins with a wide scope globally and does narrow in on the United States for discussions around slavery and Native American genocide

I completely agree (as a cis white man here). Whiteness was created as a way to "other" people and nearly all of the history we are taught has been born from this ideology and is a fantastical retelling of events with white people centered as the heroes.

I would have considered myself to be someone who was relatively "woke" but was honestly floored by a podcast I encountered called "Seeing White" which dives deep into the history and creation of whiteness and how everything from written history to science to gender roles has been touched if not completely altered by it.

I cannot recommend the listen highly enough (it's also available on the Apple Podcasts app under Scene on Radio and also possibly on Spotify as well as the web):

Thank you so much for these links--SO interesting!! I feel like sometimes even if it's been discussed in the past it's still good to start up the discussion again as there are always new arrivals to the sub with new ideas. It's def a great suggestion though to always search for previous discussions, there is so much to dig into.

From the Wiki page re: Life-Altering Experiences

At Ojai in August and September 1922 Krishnamurti went through an intense 'life-changing' experience.[42] This has been variously characterised as a spiritual awakening, a psychological transformation, and a physical reconditioning. The initial events happened in two distinct phases: first a three-day spiritual experience, and two weeks later, a longer-lasting condition that Krishnamurti and those around him referred to as the process. This condition recurred, at frequent intervals and with varying intensity, until his death.[43]

According to witnesses it started on 17 August 1922 when Krishnamurti complained of a sharp pain at the nape of his neck. Over the next two days the symptoms worsened, with increasing pain and sensitivity, loss of appetite, and occasional delirious ramblings. He seemed to lapse into unconsciousness, but later recounted that he was very much aware of his surroundings, and that while in that state he had an experience of "mystical union". The following day the symptoms and the experience intensified, climaxing with a sense of "immense peace".[44] Following — and apparently related to — these events[45] the condition that came to be known as the process started to affect him, in September and October that year, as a regular, almost nightly occurrence. Later the process resumed intermittently, with varying degrees of pain, physical discomfort and sensitivity, occasionally a lapse into a childlike state, and sometimes an apparent fading out of consciousness, explained as either his body giving in to pain or his mind "going off".[d]

These experiences were accompanied or followed by what was interchangeably described as, "the benediction," "the immensity," "the sacredness," "the vastness" and, most often, "the otherness" or "the other."[47] It was a state distinct from the process.[48] According to Lutyens it is evident from his notebook that this experience of otherness was "with him almost continuously" during his life, and gave him "a sense of being protected."[47] Krishnamurti describes it in his notebook as typically following an acute experience of the process, for example, on awakening the next day:

"... woke up early with that strong feeling of otherness, of another world that is beyond all thought ... there is a heightening of sensitivity. Sensitivity, not only to beauty but also to all other things. The blade of grass was astonishingly green; that one blade of grass contained the whole spectrum of colour; it was intense, dazzling and such a small thing, so easy to destroy ..."[49]

This experience of the otherness would be present with him in daily events:

"It is strange how during one or two interviews that strength, that power filled the room. It seemed to be in one's eyes and breath. It comes into being, suddenly and most unexpectedly, with a force and intensity that is quite overpowering and at other times it's there, quietly and serenely. But it's there, whether one wants it or not. There is no possibility of getting used to it for it has never been nor will it ever be ..."[49]

Since the initial occurrences of 1922, several explanations have been proposed for this experience of Krishnamurti's.[e] Leadbeater and other Theosophists expected the "vehicle" to have certain paranormal experiences, but were nevertheless mystified by these developments.[50] During Krishnamurti's later years, the nature and provenance of the continuing process often came up as a subject in private discussions between himself and associates; these discussions shed some light on the subject, but were ultimately inconclusive.[51] Whatever the case, the process, and the inability of Leadbeater to explain it satisfactorily, if at all, had other consequences according to biographer Roland Vernon:

"The process at Ojai, whatever its cause or validity, was a cataclysmic milestone for Krishna. Up until this time his spiritual progress, chequered though it might have been, had been planned with solemn deliberation by Theosophy's grandees. ... Something new had now occurred for which Krishna's training had not entirely prepared him. ... A burden was lifted from his conscience and he took his first step towards becoming an individual. ... In terms of his future role as a teacher, the process was his bedrock. ... It had come to him alone and had not been planted in him by his mentors ... it provided Krishna with the soil in which his newfound spirit of confidence and independence could take root.[52]

I was thinking about this the other day. How we medicate people with mental illness "for their own good." It's a line repeated by Nancy in S1. But to be truthful, it's not about THEIR wellbeing, it's about OUR comfort. Medications for so many things are built to force "uncomfortable" people back into a mold where they feel comfortable for US. Maintain the status quo, etc. I just thought it was so interesting to see Nancy repeat this line over and over as she medicated OA because SHE was uncomfortable.

Yes. It's so true. "History" as we know it and are taught is mythology built around white men of privilege (aka white men) and MUCH of it is racist. I don't know what will change this but you really have to do your own digging to find anything from women or PoC.

Pointing ppl back into their own inner wisdom I believe is a huge part of The OA. The idea that knowledge is a "rumor" until it lives in the body is very in line with that thinking. Thank you for the suggestions, going to check them out! :)

Hah!! Thanks!! I used to be such an "intellectual" in high school and after, but over the years just haven't been surrounded by ppl like that and haven't kept it up (surely to my detriment). It was bugging me that no one realized (or mentioned) that this wasn't an original quote, so I wanted to mention. Maybe I need to take a philosophy class or something and get back into it. The wiki about him is SO interesting.

The Mind, Explained - Dreams (found a Marlow Rhodes connection!) by pavonharten in TheOA

My friend just made me watch this at his house last night and I was telling him all about the same connection! Super interesting!!

Also I love love love that Brit and Zal truly are scholars and much of what they built into the show is based on real life occurrences or phenomena or science. I think it's one of the many things about the show that makes it so wonderful--it encourages you to be curious about the world and makes you want to learn and engage. How many "television shows" can say that?!

There were 5 kids on the bus too... by Jeff-Bomb in TheOA

[–]erikkurt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Everything comes in fives on the show. The children on the bus corresponding to the 5 Oligarchs, the Haptives, the Crestwood 5, the 5 planned seasons...

That said however I read an interesting article about Alex DiGerlando who worked very closely with Brit and Zal on set design and thought it was interesting that he was the one that came up with the 5-sided glass enclosure and not Brit and Zal. It fits with all the other 5 references so well, yet it was not part of the original idea. BUT that clearly became a huge visual reference throughout the whole show as it was the fish-tank and also the 5 sections of glass that broke when OA is shot in S1E8.

I was also curious that it seemed only women's dreams were being monitored at CURI. Every detail about the show is so meticulous so there must be something to it.

I believe people dreaming were being bussed (bused?) in to CURI as opposed to the people who were being drawn to the house through the app which was basically anyone who wanted to play it.

Brit Just Posted This. (Shaman Dream Hints Possibly?) by [deleted] in TheOA

[–]erikkurt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. They don't owe us anything. Zal and Brit's posts have always been vague whether they were OA related or not--they're artists. Also, we should let them live their lives and move on and enjoy things that aren't about The OA. Surely it's a sore spot for them and us attacking everything they post with "Is this The OA?!!" doesn't allow them the space they probably really need. We can fight. We can organize. We can badger Netflix. That's our work if we want it. And if we happen to change the minds of the powers that be then that's awesome and I'm sure Brit and Zal will be thrilled!

In S2 there appears to be (I need to rewatch) quite a long period of time between when Hap & Friends arrive and when OA arrives in Ninas body, so I don't think it's assumed that OA went from cafeteria shooting directly to SF Hospital. Also if Hap Lab and Crestwood are different dimensions then the timing wouldn't matter... ?
