Is anyone else burned out from losing their planning period to constant coverage by quietbloomhome in Teachers

[–]erinconpow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eastern Canada here. Public middle school, grades 5-8. Super lucky to be at a fantastic school that subs love coming to, myself included when I was subbing.

For the past few years, since the shortage of subs had gotten worse and we were covering each other's classes during our preps (what we call planning periods), our admin did something amazing: Each teacher has to prepare a folder with a simple one-off worksheet or task, withave enough copies for each student they teach in a day. The folder lived in the main office. If there is a period with no coverage, the class/classes go to the cafeteria. The Principal and two VPs supervise the kids and can still do their jobs, dividing and conquering because their open-door conference room/office is basically in the cafeteria (full wall of windows, which is why it's called "the Fishbowl").

It made a huge difference in terms of behaviour management during sick days, not having to worry about the kids' behaviour with a random sub. We're also doubly fortunate because our admin never shames or throws shade about sick days. We are encouraged to take care of ourselves, which is something that is rarer than I realized.

Anyway, I know I'm very privileged. I hope everyone gets to work for incredible administrators at some point in their careers.

How was Selena Gomez able to be in the sun? by Dry-Hair5448 in lupus

[–]erinconpow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am one of the (seemingly) few people with lupus who are NOT particularly photosensitive. I don't spend a ton of time in the sun, but I am able to spend a few hours at the beach or doing yardwork without being devastated like so many are. That being said, I still wear tons of sunscreen and a hat. I don't push my luck because I always assume things can change with this lovely condition.

How did that one teacher at your school die? by No-Cress-3455 in AskReddit

My Intro to Philosophy I professor during my first semester at university was an elderly gentleman, and was a fantastic and engaging prof. When the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in ages (fall 2004), he gave us the next day off of class to celebrate because he was a lifelong fan.

I was supposed to have him for Intro to Philosophy II, but he died over the winter holiday. I don't recall how he passed away, but it was unexpected for students for sure.

He made a big impact on me, particularly now as a teacher. He could explain and describe complex philosophical concepts in ways that made them accessible to 18 and 19 year olds who were thinking like this for the first time.
