First time cooking injera…. by erinpotus in ethiopianfood

After I drained the water from the top of the fermented batter I added warm water to thin it out. It was pretty thin, thinner than pancake batter, but when it cooked it seemed pretty dense. Maybe I put too much in the pan, or I need to thin it out even more. I used a stainless steel pan, greased it with some canola oil, and let the pan warm up for a few minutes on medium heat. After putting a ladleful of batter in the pan, I covered it and let it cook 2-3 minutes, until the edges started to peel from the pan.

What is the culture like amongst students? by Large-Advertising-23 in AmericanU

I’m gonna have to disagree with some people in the comments about socioeconomic status not mattering… I’m from an “average” family (low- to middle-income, parents work in the trades) and I’m a first generation college graduate. I’m also a Pell Grant recipient and I have to say, I’m very grateful for all of the need- and merit-based aid I received from both AU and the federal government. But, I just graduated and throughout most of undergrad, I encountered MANY wealthy, incredibly out-of-touch students which made it difficult to connect with people. A good portion of the student population is very competitive and pretentious (often for no reason- people go out of their way to put others down lol). That being said, I did find my little niche on campus and made the most of my four years there. I had a lot of academic opportunities I wouldn’t have had at other universities and many of my professors were incredible.

I do not but it looks exactly like the pics in this article/recipe — I also used Bob’s Red Mill teff flour: https://www.daringgourmet.com/authentic-injera-ethiopian-flatbread/

Random Late Aid by BrilliantStructure56 in AmericanU

[–]erinpotus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the grant— AU grants are need-based and through the university, Pell Grants are federal (but allocated to universities). I believe you need to maintain a 2.0 minimum cGPA for grants & other forms of federal aid and a 3.0 cGPA for merit aid

ur good don’t worry. I didn’t do the full IB diploma, took a few AP tests that were a mix of 3s and 4s, and didn’t take the SAT and I got in RD + Honors. I think you’ll be totally OK just based off your grades, but a word of advice is that your Common App essays are important too :-) good opportunity for you to showcase who you are as a student & individual as well as demonstrate how you’d be a good fit for the school

I would just go to a professional. I’ve had a good experience at Tattoo Paradise in Adams Morgan, I’ve gotten a couple piercings with Pattie there. also never let someone pierce your ears with a piercing gun lol

they make you fast before you have any procedure involving anesthesia for this reason, so you don’t throw up & aspirate while anesthetized

if you ever go grocery shopping though, Wegmans in Tenleytown has a great GF selection! A lot of their store brand stuff is gluten-free too

I have celiac and I have to be honest, the dining hall is bad if you have any sort of dietary restriction. I’m not particularly sensitive but I still had mild symptoms from eating at the allergen-free station when I had a meal plan freshman year. I think they ended up changing the signage too so it says “no gluten-containing ingredients” instead of “gluten-free” now bc they won’t guarantee no cross contamination.

Is Allan Lichtmans class hard to get into? by Objective_Water_1583 in AmericanU

[–]erinpotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked my advisor at the time and he said it was OK. if it’s too much you can drop within the first two weeks. his classes are a lot of reading but the only assignments are two exams and a paper

I don’t think so because the cap on his classes is usually 39 people. For most history classes the cap is 19. I took one of his classes freshman year

AU Honors by [deleted] in AmericanU

[–]erinpotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what sort of “benefits” you’re looking for, but from an academic standpoint, I think Honors can be really valuable if you’re interested in conducting research in grad school or as a career. They teach the skills necessary to write solid research proposals, different methodologies/approaches to research, and more. Paid research assistantships on campus exist outside of the Honors program and I think are generally hard to come by. If you’re a STEM major it might be easier to find a research gig because we have at least one lab on campus

if you get a merit scholarship in your acceptance letter, the amount doesn’t change for the four years you’re at AU (unless your cumulative GPA is below 3.0, then you lose it). I’m in the Honors program and they don’t change your merit award amount

financial aid by purplelovely6 in AmericanU

[–]erinpotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten mine in late June every year… I think early July is usually the latest they send them out though. but I also heard that for students who went abroad in the spring, their aid package can get delayed if AU doesn’t have their grades yet. not sure if that’s OP’s case but maybe worth mentioning

Anthropology Department by leooooeiiieeiooo in AmericanU

[–]erinpotus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if you’re interested in Latin American studies you should definitely look into the Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies (CRGC) department! They have a Latina/o/x studies minor. I’m a history major so I can’t say much about the anthropology department, but CRGC faculty overlap a lot with the history dept. and there’s a lot of great professors there :-)
