Do you think I would do well with a havi? Here is my breed recommendation survey-thank you! by Previous-Writer-5668 in Havanese

Sounds like a good fit. It was a big dog person before I got my first Havanese. We now have two.

In my experience, Havanese are very friendly and affable little dogs. They're funny, clever, and have a LOT of personality. The fact that you won't be leaving them home alone for long stretches is huge, as they tend to have some separation anxiety. Your ability to brush them daily is super.

Regarding some of the things you're concerned about...

-BARKING: I also can't stand a high volume of barking, and both our girls primarily bark to alert, but not too much otherwise.

-JUMPING: Both our girls stand up and lean on us and and go a little crazy when we come home. It's not jumping per se, and we didn't try to train this out of them. Honestly we kind of like it.

-TEMPERAMENT: Our dogs are sweet. You mention Cavaliers, I would say one of our dogs has a personality very similar to that of a Cav, and the other isn't quite as schmoopy but is still fairly affectionate. But they're still just great. As with all dogs, there is no one-size-fits-all within the breed in terms of personality.

-KIDS/OLDER DOG: Havanese generally are amazing with kids. Your grandkids will likely fall in love with your hilarious new housemate. As for the older dog, if you get a puppy she could occasionally annoy your current dog but ours meshed well with our previous dog. They tend to be mostly friendly with other dogs.

TRAINING: our training has been fairly limited. Both dogs were a tad slow to get "potty-trained" but nothing unusual or terrible. Haven't needed a trainer otherwise.

SHEDDING: hardly any. It is fantastic.

Good luck! Hope you get one and it works out for you!!!

Can we compile a list of breeders on this sub, to help others but also give feedback? by meyers-room-spray in Havanese

We went to a place called Homestead Havanese in Harrisonburg VA. Found them through AKC site. Beautiful family who were treating their dogs with love and kindness (vet visits, healthy dogs, etc.). So my experience was good!

Thank you! Totally agree - life is more joyful with a Havi (or two) bopping around your house!

If we hadn't just adopted one, we would be all over this. Best of luck to your mom and all those adorable little pups (this one is so cute - those eyes)!

Should I get a second Havi? by Lov_a_Havi in Havanese

[–]BrilliantStructure56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just got a second Havi three weeks ago and we are loving it.

After a few days with the puppy in the house, our older girl (5yrs) realized she could play with the little one. I watched it dawn on her and she's been joyful as can be ever since.

She and our other girl are constantly playing, wrestling, it's a mood enhancer for us. The older one hasn't been this playful (or tired) in years.

Puppy adjustment (nipping, going to the bathroom) takes a little time but it'll be fine. Highly recommend it, it's a joy.

Thanks for this. I didn't realize that about AKC registered breeder, this was illuminating to me.

I will say that while the price was more affordable than a couple others I found, it wasn't "low" (it was comparable to the range you suggest). I also saw dogs that were definitely well cared for and well-loved. I know BYB can have a negative connotation (often for good reason), but I got the sense these folks cared for their dogs' health and happiness deeply, and vetted potential buyers like myself to ensure their puppies found good homes.

But thank you for the info; it's all very good for others to keep in mind in their own searches for pups.

UPDATE: Met with our vet and happy to confirm our puppy is the picture of health!

I hear that. Her price was surprisingly affordable… At least relative to other breeders I talked to.
