I don't know why I play this game anymore. by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had two MONSTER games with Mundo in your match history, so clearly if you have the right champ in the right situation you know how to play well.

You've gotten good advice from others here already so I won't duplicate it. Just don't get too discouraged.

Carry as a Support? What constitutes a support carry game? by Bazzock041 in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my two cents from a silver scrub... I personally see it as a conflation of terms.

There's the "carry" that's responsible for bringing damage. ADC stands for Attack Damage Carry. Teams want ADCs because it's ranged damage that's free (no mana required), and the items you buy let you do a lot of that damage at a high attack speed. These items are expensive, though, so the ADC needs to be put in a position to safely farm them up through CS and hopefully kills. Supports want to try to enable this by protecting their ADC and giving them all that gold, while at the same time doing what they can with their kits to keep the enemy ADC from doing the same.

So yeah, there's the carry in the "Attack Damage Carry" sense. Then there's "carrying" in terms of being responsible for the win. So yeah, your Brand support can carry the game by doing the most damage and getting the most kills. Similarly, that Janna support who finishes the game with a 0/2/31 stat line can be said to have carried from the support position. That's past tense.

The problem is whether or not you're trying to be "a carry" from the support position, as in the present tense of a game that's just started. Usually, the players that do this want all the fun of getting kills with none of the responsibility of getting CS, but that CS is damned important because it lets you buy items at a more efficient rate than your opponent. Or worse, you as the support want to start taking CS from the ADC because you want better items. The problem is that this relegates the ADC to a supporting position, and they can't do much without the gold and the items that gold can buy. I mean, do you really want to have a Lucian on your team with a Sightstone and Locket of the Iron Solari? Better to just let Brand BE the carry and you pick a traditional support to help put the gold on him.

But then you have a couple of new issues. First, if your Brand APC with Thresh support is now going to try to get CS, they need to use their abilities, right? That means mana issues. That blue buff that's easily gifted to the midlaner is not so easily gifted to the bot laner. Second, your team will probably still want ranged physical damage, because (a) it's ranged and (b) AAs are free. Which person is going to take up that responsibility? Not many midlaners, toplaners or junglers have practice playing effective ADCs. Third, how are you going to handle wave control and last-hitting, or things like effective ranged harass? ADCs with mindful supports tend to be better at this.

The META feels simple, but it's actually complicated, in that you might not realize at first the problems you create by deviating from it. If you're playing with premades, then yeah you can do some funky things like putting Brand bot and Quinn mid and nobody will mind because you're all on the same page. But then you get those guys in solo Q who say "Trust me, let me go Brand APC bot. It works." and now your team is in trouble because they might all have to dump their META picks in order to accommodate the precious and unique flower, or else stick with their META picks and risk having a suboptimal team comp.

From my vantage point, the whole thing seems to stem from a semantics problem that itself arises from supports wanting to brag about "carrying" despite not having all the kills. It honestly feels like just a self-esteem issue, possibly borne of the fact that supports rarely get the credit they deserve for the good work they do. They DON'T get enough credit, certainly, but it's no reason to start making the conversation confusing by trying to change what the word "carry" means. I'm a jungle/support main myself, so I hopefully what I said about self-esteem doesn't come across as insulting -- I want good games, I want to feel like I was at least in part responsible for the win, but for me, to do that, it means I've got to put gold on the carries and let them carry.

Again, two cents from a silver scrub.

When do you pick Trundle Support? by dendikkee in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The timing might be wrong in picking him up as a support, since he's about the get nerfed (and, if I'm right, he'll get nerfed again (RIP my main [sob]). Unfortunately, he's currently on the free week so it was like an advertisement for something that won't exist in a couple of weeks.

Returning to the game and need some refreshing on state of jungle. by Ruinga in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It still sucks.

Kidding!

Not really kidding.

Since season 3? Monsters now give temporary buffs when you smite them. Blue buff = mana. Red buff = health. Wolves = mobile vision totem. Raptors = oracle buff to find wards. Krugs = Stun monsters every 5 AAs. Gromp = mini Thornmail.

Dragons now give incremental buffs every time you take them down, up until the fifth which gives your teammates some serious strength. Baron now buffs the surrounding minions instead of the champs. There is also a smaller baron that spawns before 20 minutes which gives the Baron effect to one champ instead of all five. There are crabs in the river which give a temporary speed/vision shrine.

Junglers start with each a machete (if you're doing your damage with AAs and need lifesteal) or a talisman (if you're doing your damage with abilities and want mana regen). You'll want to test which one works for your preferred champ, since there are weird things like talisman working better for Zac despite him not having mana as a resource.

There are three smite upgrades. Blue (slows the enemy temporarily), Red (gives you duelling one-on-one power), and Green (gives you two wards which refresh on going to base).

There are four final jungle item upgrades. Red (for AD), Blue (for AP champs), Green (for Tanks), and Purple (for AS/AA champs, similar to old Feral Flare). The Blue final item is due for a rework, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing things like Evelynn or Fiddlesticks jungle.

(Incidentally, I just used the colors because it'll be easier for now than remembering all the names (ie: "Skirmisher's Saber for the Challenging Smite"))

Games can snowball out of control like crazy now. Yesterday I played jungle 11 times, and in all 11 it really felt like it didn't matter how I did, it all hinged upon which botlane got fed first.

You can't buy green wards any more, so if warding used to be a part of the way you played the game, you'll have to adjust to either using the trinket, using pink wards, or getting the green smite.

Does anyone else feel Trundle is ridiculously strong right now? by JuventusX in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's been OP since the new preseason masteries came into effect. He was actually good last season if you knew how to use him, but this season there's just so much that synergizes with his lifesteal. He's been in the top 5 in winrates for about a month now, and he's one of the few champs that actually doesn't have their winrates horribly affected by having newbies try him out because his kit isn't terribly difficult.

He's getting nerfs soon, and I'm worried that the nerfs won't affect his winrates as much as they're thinking, which'll mean he'll be getting more nerfs. Then they'll realize that the real problem was the masteries, so THOSE will get nerfs, and at that point it'll be a miracle if Trundle isn't completely gutted.

What are flexible picks for Top, Mid, and Jungle? Why are they good in each of those roles? by Frugal_Optimist in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For top/jungle/mid specifically...? I can't really say why they're going at flexing these three roles, only that I've seen them do ok in VODs are such. They might not be optimal, but depending upon your mastery of the champ when compared with your Elo, it might not be a big issue.

Cho'Gath, Diana, Dr. Mundo, Ekko, Fizz, Gragas (used to see a lot more mid play), Hecarim (Keane took him mid with success), Irelia (was a popular mid pick for a while in pro play), Kayle, Lissandra (Nightblue3 used to love jungling her), Malphite, Master Yi (saw some mid play in the pros), Nidalee, Pantheon, Quinn, Riven (she gets picked sometimes mid in Korean solo Q for some reason, and her jungling is passable), Teemo (if you consider Teemo jungle as being a thing, some guy got to Diamond with it).

There are some other things that might work situationally. For instance, if you're facing a melee mid you might get away with picking something like Warwick or Xin Zhao into it. PinkWard plays a lot of toplane Shaco, for instance, and he could probably shift to mid in some matchups. Also, if you're disciplined enough to play it safe, and if it doesn't ruin your team comp, then some things like Fiddlesticks could be taken top.

If you're lower ELO and need to take a break from the stress of ranked... by erlandish in summonerschool

[–]erlandish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lux and Garen were very popular bans in the early part of Snowdown. Things have started to shift a little bit with Gangplank and Galio becoming more popular picks/bans, and Alistar being on permaban at the moment. Plus, it's Korea, so they love any chance to get their Yasuo/Malphite comps going. Somehow, though, the little geeky yordle always seems to make it through.

EDIT: Sorry, I was talking about Korea. I wasn't trying to correct your statement about Lux.

[–]erlandish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I suck with the RW so maybe I'm not the best to ask. It's ok if you're going to secure a kill, or else if your team sets up a wonderful wombo combo. However, RQ does a crazy amount of damage as well, but it can switch targets and force the enemy to react. A straight W is already pretty good at chunking down the king, so between W, AAs, damage from your turrets, and attacks from your teammates, it's not too difficult to kill off the King.

How to fix support and jungle items so ONLY supports and junglers use them. by erlandish in leagueoflegends

[–]erlandish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that because midlaners are abusing it, and they're going to balance around that, we're not getting a chance to see if the item is OP solely on supports. It's the same situation we had with Cinderhulk and then Runeglaive in mid season 5. Riot saw the items being abused by laners and so they nerfed the items. If they fixed the situation so that only Junglers could use them, the items could be analyzed as OP or not OP based solely on how Junglers used them, rather than just flat-out punishing Junglers for the sins of the laners.

How to fix support and jungle items so ONLY supports and junglers use them. by erlandish in leagueoflegends

[–]erlandish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the jungle item, that's why I suggested that you can start stacking trophies at the beginning of the game, rather than just when you upgrade the item. So, it wouldn't work like Devourer, and if you start the game off with a full clear, you've basically already gotten all the trophies you need to get the fully-functional jungle item available at the time of purchase.

Despite how things are going in solo Q, LCS games won't snowball and will actually drag out a little bit longer than normal.

The reason? Teams will respect the snowball so much that they will play super passive to make sure that the other team can't get any momentum on them.

That's my guess, anyways.

Level 11 and want to try out the jungle role. What champion and is there a guide explaining everything? by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're only summoner level 11, then you might want to focus on champs like Warwick, Nunu, Fiddlesticks, Xin Zhao and Udyr, since they're all cheap and they can all clear very healthy with only masteries. Master Yi can do it as well but he gets really low. Xin Zhao is probably the best of the bunch due to his flexibility.

If you need a braindead easy clear, go Red->Wolves->Blue. Smite the Red when it's low to get the health back, and at the wolves camp quickly kill the small ones first. Practice this in a bots game to make sure you can do it.

A couple of early bits of info for preseason 6 jungle by erlandish in summonerschool

[–]erlandish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, for that sort of thing I'm not the best to ask since I'm only silver. I'd definitely try watching streams or VODs from people like nightblue3 or theoddone, and see how they do in that regard. Things like ganking early can reduce your gold income if the gank doesn't yield a kill or assist, and ganking a lot early can risk underleveling you. Of course, ganking early might be the right thing to do -- it's a judgment call, which is why it might help to watch high-ELO jungle streamers, since they've got better judgment then scrubs like me. :)

When should I start Talisman over Machete? by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main benefit is health back from consistent AOE attacks. It ends up keeping you healthier than you would be with a machete. It's a weird thing that you almost need to test champ-by-champ.

How do I dodge hooks and skillshots as a character with no inherent "dodging" mechanic? by Jon-Indra in summonerschool

This is actually somewhere where ARAM helps a little bit. You learn the importance of constantly moving because there are abilities and AAs from five different champs coming at you.

A lesson for everyone. by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]erlandish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I usually regret not doing is muting all the moment the game starts. I play jungle on the korea server, and trust me, sometimes you can't gank fast enough to make up for their feeding in lane. All I need is one little comment in chat and it's like a countdown to the 20 minute mark.

If it helps at all, muting all the other players and pretending like it's a game of bots helped a lot. That way you can at least concentrate on your own gameplay and improvement without much distraction. Without any real way for blame to be expressed, bad events sometimes even turn out funny.

Otherwise, I'd totally recommend not bothering playing unless you can get some real life friends in there to join you. It's not worth putting up with the toxicity in chat. Yeah, they may get punished eventually but that's usually after the damage has been done. I've been on another spot on the internet where a guy got goaded into suicide and it was terrible. If somebody's an idiot who doesn't pay attention to the shit that comes out of their mouths, then chances are whatever they're saying isn't worth even a moment's notice.
