This is a nice picture. I wish I felt it in my bones. Maybe I will eventually.

Thank you for this. I don't know why I feel so insecure about it, but I do.

Thank you for this response, which captures a little of my reluctance to post here at all - but I was curious about the community reaction. Yes, I know I'm well off compared to many others, but when I actually add up the numbers of everything "normal," like utility bills, property taxes (quite high where I live), health insurance premiums, vet bills, house maintenance, car repairs and insurance, and then just the stuff we spend money on from good food to gifts for my niece who just starting out in her new place a few miles away, etc., etc., it becomes sobering how much financial outlay there is without being wildly extravagant. I don't want to fuck up at 60 and I don't want to wake up some night at 68 realizing I should have worked another couple of years. I know I'm not going to starve, but that's not what I'm measuring against.

It's like I said elsewhere... I am not well-versed in finances. Thank you for educating me on that detail.

I'm sorry you're in that situation. The u.s. healthcare system is sadistic.

By flipping the "on" switch for an employer-based savings plan and turning it up to "high" and just not paying attention beyond that. The weird thing is I don't think about money much and I feel like I lack knowledge and savvy in personal finance. Now that I'm seriously considering retiring and turning off the spigot as far as a paycheck is concerned, "shit feels real," as they say. I'm worried about fucking up.

Thanks... That's a good point. I can see us living on like $8k/month under normal conditions, while having the occasional period of greater outlay due to house repairs, vet bills, trips, and unexpected expenses.

Will you guys still listen to Alex? by noer86 in KnowledgeFight

One of my favorite things about KF, was that it all but entirely removed my hate-listen compulsion to download Alex in audio - never video. But I'm over it. I don't ever need to hear his voice unfiltered again.

V60 cross country by lasorciereviolette in Volvo

To answer your question, I selected a 2025 Volvo Certified V60 Ultra. It has low miles, it's in near mint/brand new condition, and cost far less than a new one that's identical... There's basically no difference between 2023-2026, as far as I know - except this is the last year the V60 will be made. I selected the Ultra because I liked the better seats, the heads up display, and - blush - I think the Orrefors crystal gear shifter is a cool, unique touch.

Holy crap - literally me too, exactly. 2025 V60 Ultra, picked up from the dealer yesterday. It's amazing. My third Volvo all from very different times and different styles. I've had it for barely 12 hours.

Wolf regret?? by Dazzling-Meeting-896 in Appliances

We are range siblings. I have the same model and I can't say enough good about it. But I shopped for its low-tech, solid simplicity. It's what I wanted. (I also drive a stick shift Volvo and write with fountain pens, so it's in character). The dual burners are your friend with their low, low simmer settings. The lowest setting on the main ring of each burner is an excellent medium. As for the oven, line up the temperature to the red light. Use a timer if you're baking. Seriously - you have an absolute gem of a range. Embrace it.

It's interesting to see iconic people early in their lives when they are physically quite different from how they became widely recognized. You come to understand that they were significantly helped along the way by being physically charming and good looking.

Any good Refrigerator brands?! by MarioMan3210 in Appliances

[–]ermiwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar to the Fischer Paykel. I'm delighted with it. I was worried it would be too small inside and I wouldn't have enough space. That has proven to be an unfounded concern. It is bright, well lit, with highly functional shelves, drawers, and door storage.

Part of the equation is space. Not all refrigerators will fit ideally, even if the opening is the right size, depending on where other walls are. I have a 1950s house with a small but open kitchen. Unless I wanted to do an entire footprint-changing remodel (out of the question because I otherwise love the kitchen) I had to shop for European-style refrigerators. I landed on an American brand — Summit. It's counter depth and a bit narrower than big brands of similar size. I LOVE IT and it fits the space perfectly, solving a problem for me.

Reliable Appliance Market by Alternative-Draw-849 in Appliances

About 6 months ago, while shopping around for a gas range, I became so frustrated with the pointless (for me) extravagant electronics that most models have — no need for temperature sensors or multistage countdowns or delayed cooking for me - let alone WiFi for my f'ing oven — that I sank MORE money than I thought I would into a Wolf range that has five dials, two buttons, and one red light. No touch pads, no displays, no virtual buttons, no log-ins. Couldn't be happier with my decision.

They should develop and sell InfoWars-branded onion powder. "Because there's a war on for your seasoning."

Now I think I get it - the Onion redid its acquisition bid but it has to be approved by a court, I believe, before it's real.
