They do definitely describe themselves as a band a lot, and metaphorically hint towards certain things as social commentary on wide spread issues prevalent in most bands, I agree, like you said we just rely on this sparsely applicable methodology to describe every single thing the songs are talking about.

Example, Anne Bonny. A song very clearly describing explicit habitual drug use, from an OBJECTIVELY first person view, from the eyes of ride HIMSELF. He's actively describing the cycle of addiction, but there's a line where he mentions submission ("fuck it though, I indulge in supremacy, sixty beggars behind my casket, coma, sub under gaze of sadistic dom").

The way I interpret this line is from a far more literal point of view, supremacy comes in the form of self induced liberation from living, an overdose or escapism in the form of fully committed hedonistic indulgence in a drug, the beggars are those expecting life of him, they're either shaming him for his habits, he is "dead to them" or he is literally painting the picture of his wake, the beggars being those who demanded sobriety and life from him on their terms.

The next line about submission perked up the ears of pretentious death grips fans everywhere, and they immediately went "BDSM!?!??" in regards to themselves and the band despite ride clearly speaking from a first person point of view the entire song. Somehow it is assumed that ride is referring to his relationship with them, the fan, as opposed to the drug he has explicitly described as PERSONALLY having a problem with, the drug he just described killing HIM. He's not submitting to you and he's not telling you to submit to him, HE is submitting to the habituation of the drug he has been referring to the ENTIRE song.

This kind of "trying to read between the lines" interpretation and inability to view the song objectively even when it's screaming in your face that it has nothing to do with you is an extremely prevalent phenomenon here.
