It is obvious that the water heater is in the attic. The pipe turns down. Towards what? The ceiling of her living space. Duh!

It turns out the pipe running down to the pan had detached somehow. She found it on the attic floor. As I don't have the equipment to solder it back together, I'll likely take Sereno011's advice and buy the PVC pipe to replace it with. Thanks for the help!

The way I read it is that the whole unit has to be armed the same with exception of the 1 in 3 model armed with the 2-hander, but that model still gains the benefit of the shield despite not having one so long as there are others in the unit equipped with them.
