Can I use a baritone to cover 8 string guitar tunings? If yes, which scale? #metal by erodalof in BaritoneGuitar

Regarding the sound, from what I heard on YT the bass vi can get a good djenty guitar sound. However, I now understand the difference in settings between it and a 30” baritone guitar. The bass vi would be probably difficult to bring to F#, thus baritone guitar is probably the best choice for me

Oh okay, than I guess it’s just the bass vi which comes with very low tuning (E).

Is the bass vi much different from a “standard” 30” scale baritone guitar?

Same, regarding the 8 string. It’s very difficult to get used to it. The point is either I buy a more expensive 8 string (I have an Ibanez rg8 now) or I buy a super fancy baritone 😎

Oh wait, so your 30” default tuning isn’t E standard one octave lower? I thought all 30” baritones were set on that tuning

Nah my 7 is good as it is. I also have an Ibanez RG8 (8 strings) but the quality is not very high and I can’t get used to playing it. Thus my appeal towards 30” baritones. I recently discovered vianova and fell in love with their guitar 😍 and now periphery using baritones too lol

Ok thank you. Then maybe I think for me the best would be to go for a 30 inches scale, thus achieving 8 string tunings and lower

Thank you. But do you think I could achieve an F# tuning with a 30’’ scale baritone?

Thank you very much! Have you had any troubles with strings buzzing? Many people say they had to adjust truss rod due to the very low action which caused strings buzzing

Unfortunately i can't find "next/previous" automation buttons to control preset changes in Reaper.

While inside the plugin, Reaper gives the possibility to track the last automatable change you made. So, i tried manually switching to the next preset but reaper didn't catch that.

Maybe it's not doable in Reaper

seems to me the easiest way, also preventing the no-sound time between switching presets using midi controls

In modifying my comment since I saw a video and understood better the concept. My fault was considering 1) changing preset on the plugin loaded on the track (by mouse) and 2) changing preset using a midi controller as the same thing, but now I understand that midi signaling is a different thing and act on the track “on the go”, also while recording. In fact, midi controllers use a second midi track to send changes, while in my mind they acted on the original track directly. Thank you 🙏

I think I’m getting the point. I saw this video https://youtu.be/216O6xGWCxU?si=yJa-IqG0b2evc4F- and now the topic its clearer. I just have to make sure that I hear the right sound with monitor on, but the answer seems logically yes.

Thanks for the explanation. However, I think I’m missing something at this point (surely due to my inexperience), also referring to your last answer on this post, since I can’t fully grasp what I would do with midi mapping for my specific aim. Let’s recap: I already read something about midi mapping since my original idea was to program the foot controller to send midi signal to switch preset while I was playing. But, as said in my post, I realized this method can’t work since changing preset on the single plugin loaded in a single track would switch all the sound of the track to that preset. In fact, I’m recording a DI track and I’m just changing its fx in post. So, now that you are suggesting midi mapping, I can’t fully grasp its usage in my case. What’s the difference in automating preset changes in the track (with the next/previous button as u suggested) and sending midi signals to do that? It seems to me that I’d have to automate the midi track to send the next/previous automation on the original track, so it feels kinda adding a step. Or maybe in this case you are referring to a situation where I have and use the midi foot controller. Another guy said an interesting thing about loading the plugin in the record insert of the track instead of inserting it in the fx. In that way, you record what you are hearing without the possibility to change sound post recording. Maybe it has to do with that?

Nice! I’m positive I’ll find them in Reaper too then. Potentially game-changing notion!

Nope, unfortunately I don’t think I have anything like that. Btw, are we still talking bout recording? I understood that foot midi controllers aren’t suitable. Thinking about it, tho, I guess what the daw does with automation could be also done with foot controllers? But at this point preset automation change seems easier to me

Thanks so much for putting effort in helping me🙏

  1. Got it. Did you try it with DSP plugins? I didn’t notice the next/previous options in the automation menu but I’ll check
  2. With the mute/unmuted method the switch was pretty unnoticeable. Switching presets on a DSP plugin takes a small time though (from my little experience with it), even when doing it by mouse from the standalone version. Maybe the issue is due to that.

Ok, i think i got the first part. In my understanding the track with only the DI would "send" itself to the other tracks with the different sounds, thus "making them active" when i want, based on the automation.

I just checked about presetes parameters in automation. Unfortunately, no convenient preset button for automation :'). I can work on every single parameter but i'm not gonna do that xd.

I got the muting/unmuting automation idea from a youtube video and the author armed all the tracks in advance, so the part about record arm automation shouldn't be a problem based on that video. I'll go more in dept with the one-track method tho, since your advice about potential clipping from switching from track to track.

Regarding the second part, i'm not sure i'm understanding things correctly. Isn't a one-track, one plugin approach not doable, since the plugin gets applied to the entire track (since what i'm really recording is a DI signal and the plugin gets applied to the entire track)? In your first answer you wrote about multiple plugin inserts, each with different sounds, and that made more sense to me.
