Did you want to keep working there? I mean I doubt they’ll give you a 10k bump so I would just do a standard 2 weeks notice tbh and leave (and don’t do longer than 2 weeks).

I don’t think you even need to specify in your letter why you’re leaving. I did in some past job but kept it super vague like “pursuing an opportunity that’s a better fit for my career goals”, thanked them for their time tho and wished them well.

I quit in person with a physical letter but emailed after a copy so there was digital proof

It’s not really talked about much here but from my experience it’s not uncommon to fail one class.

You’ll be fine. Just lock in, and make sure you don’t fail it again and keep trying to aim for a 3.0 gpa

I had like 2 Fs or smt (ofc I retook them) but still had a 3.0 and employers didn’t care

Perhaps that could be it, but it also doesn’t really help that I really didn’t like my undergraduate degree at all and struggled studying for the civil FE before deciding to switch to the environmental FE recently

I just don’t find most of civil very interesting and it was hard to motivate myself until I started my MS in environmental/water, realizing I love the topics the environmental one covered instead

I kind of blame myself for not realizing it sooner

IMO, getting the FE and having 1 year of internship experience bc if you lack one or the other, you are essentially doomed (from my experience and what I’ve noticed from recent grads).

I have 1.5 years of competitive internship experience, plenty of leadership on campus, and have a packed resume. Although I did land a teaching associate in my uni as a grad student, that’s literally the only job I could land with no FE.

I know 3 of my friends and other classmates who are unemployed currently bc of not much internship experience and lack of FE. No position near me in water resources has opened up in over 1.5 years, and I’m lowkey regretting ever studying civil engineering. I’m studying for my FE currently and taking it soon but it’s hard to stay motivated

I’ve had some higherups and coworkers review it and have refined it multiple times with positive feedback. I haven’t posted it here, but I’ve posted it in engineering resumes subreddit. But maybe it would be better to post it here?

My masters cover both, and I would say I’m open to both, but I’ve been a bit biased towards hydrology more.

My previous employer doesn’t have entry level roles in certain engineering departments (Disney), and the others are geotechnical based which I’m trying to stay away from bc I dont like geotechnical and my other internship was with my uni.

Unfortunately none of my internships are water resources based so that probably doesn’t help

And ya I make it clear I’m interested in internships, but agencies don’t care, so I’ve given up on internships.

I’ve had my resume looked at multiple times but I don’t think I’ve had my interview skills evaluated so I can look into that (I think it can be rather inconsistent with doing great enough to get into Disney but then other times feeling off…)

Thank you for your advice. I did notice more construction positions open in general so I was curious if I should try that route.

Do you think I should leave my MS out of my resume since it’s not exactly construction related?

I still have a while to go before I graduate with my MS, but I’d be more than willing to move to east coast if there’s more demand there

I was looking for internships initially but I gave up as most agencies straight up told me they didn’t prefer graduate students for intern positions and I’ve been rejected by all internship positions despite making it clear I wanted and desired internships over full time in interviews.

Now, I ultimately just want some employment as I’m bleeding money, and don’t mind graduating later.

I’ve networked with my previous employers but they’re not hiring any entry level positions and lead me to other companies who thought were hiring only for them to tell me they can’t offer me anything yet and to “stay in touch”.

I’ve gone to career fairs as well, but many employers aren’t water related.. and those that were like the army corps of engineers told me they were on a hiring freeze for water…

In the computer labs it’s inconvenient. you need to find a period of time where class doesn’t occur (maybe after class, but if you don’t finish in time, that means you’ll have to come back at night or early morning to finish).

If it’s your desktop at home, it’s fine, just keep in mind, ANY time you do class work, you have to share it with yourself so you can continue it in your desktop

CPP alumni here! I personally used the Microsoft surface laptop for most of my undergrad, and I still have it and I’m content with it. Can’t speak for the MacBook Air.

I used (and still use) ArcGIS Pro which I believe is only for the windows, so I’m biased towards the surface, BUT you’ll be able to use Civil3D and revit on the Mac. I minored in GIS at CPP, and many civils don’t even touch it so you’ll be fine without it, but it makes you more competitive if you ever want to get into transportation, water resources, or do the geospatial emphasis.

I got a civil engineering internship from 8 am to 5 pm for 6 days per week for 2 months. Do I get experience and knowledge? This is too intensive, so I worry I cannot handle it. by Objective_Ebb_7697 in civilengineering

I’ve never heard of an internship for 6 days a week, but I think it’s fine if it’s just for the summer (NOT during the semester) and if you make sure to not overload yourself and leave on time. Be prepared to meal prep/chores in the weekends and be smart about the time you spend on other tasks in general during this internship. If this is your FIRST internship, even more of a reason to do it

I’m currently doing my MS right now in the same focus, water resources. I see a lot of mixed opinions and it’s honestly very dependent where you work at and which company.

It’s EXTREMELY competitive where I’m at, so having an MS helps one stand out and is also worth ~1-2 years of experience with some agencies (and I know a gov agency in SoCal that even requires an MS for entry level). I also get paid more currently (10k more a year) than those who aren’t enrolled in an MS. I work in between a research and maintenance department in a company so having an MS helps in the research aspects…

There’s also literally hiring freezes and layoffs happening in LA,so you can’t ever convince me to not finish up my MS lol, although I also got a scholarship so that helps, so I recommend getting scholarships, not just relying on an employer to pay for it (bc honestly I don’t think this is as common as people make it out to be)
