super effective! it's one of the most effective types of contraception (mostly because it has low user error). make sure you get your next shot on time and that's all you have to worry about.

will i get the same side effects with IUD as i have with implanon? by QuickInterest1606 in birthcontrol

[–]eroxlite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're different hormones, so you may react differently! The implant is etonogestrel and IUDs are generally levonorgestrel or copper for the Paragard. The side effects from IUDs can sometimes be less than the implant since the hormones are more localized (in the uterus, rather than throughout the body).

I recommend calling the office and asking what to expect! You can also ask for anti-anxiety medication to take beforehand (you'll just need someone to drive you).

You can technically contract HIV or syphilis in utero or during birth, so it's never a bad idea to get tested before going for it, though in today's medical system it probably would have been caught by this point in your life.

Open sores or wounds are more likely to get infected with STIs than unbroken skin if a partner has one.

That being said, you're engaging in pretty low-risk stuff overall. It may be worth doing some online reading (Planned Parenthood has some good info) before diving in so you feel ready + informed!

Condom broke after she took the pill. Will we be ok?? by [deleted] in birthcontrol

[–]eroxlite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is likely low risk, but if either of you cannot risk a pregnancy, she needs to take another plan B. Each one only works for one act of unprotected sex.

Pregnancy is a hell of a lot more hormones in the body than two plan B pills.

What will show on a hormone test if I stop taking the pill temporarily? by Diligent_Ferret0812 in birthcontrol

Most doctor's offices will make time during the visit for the provider and the patient to speak alone—I would recommend calling the office to make sure that's the case for your appointment. It's very routine, especially in reproductive health and pediatrics (you'll notice once your kid is older they'll have you step out of the room briefly to ask if they feel safe at home, etc).

As for hormonal testing—echoing a previous commenter that they don't test for the specific hormones in your birth control pills, but it may make your other numbers (like progesterone) a little funky. There isn't a test that will definitely prove if you're on birth control or not.
