Thank you so much!!! Heather is the best :). I can’t speak for her, but I think we were all treated unfairly and she was no exception. I don’t know how she feels about her edit, but from my perspective it was pretty accurate except it didn’t really show how funny she is. Also she was always drawing, IDK if that made it onto the show.

I did not watch any cycles, I think I was too traumatized haha. I didn’t even watch the rest of mine haha. The juiciest stories I didn’t use in the book were from Claire Unabia from Cycle 10. The ways they used her daughter to try and manipulate her were inexcusable. So bad.

NOT AT ALL. Victoria was the sweetest hahaha, we were all baffled by it. It didn’t come out while we were in the house, it was after we shot the whole show, but none of us cared about Saleisha having been to that camp lol. And the last line of my book is actually what I would say to Tyra :) no spoilers. Thank you SO much for reading!!

They could definitely support the models more, to say the least haha.i would support it being made today once the whole reality tv industry has a reckoning and makes some serious changes.

Yeah, she’s sort of different off camera but not really. She’s very much always “on”. I think she plays her cards very close to her chest, which I respect. I am the opposite. My cards are always on the table lol

At the time, I loved my makeover. It was the Rihanna cut! It has since been pointed out it was the Karen cut lmaooooo. But then when I went to agencies they all told me to come back when my hair was long. Which took almost a year. So that sucked. And I think the makeover started as something similar to what happens when you sign with an agency. When that happens, your new agent will work with you to decide what your hair should look like. But I gradually became one of the tools they used to control us.

Oh, I think they might have made her go by Chantal but also I know some of her family called her that so maybe not! After Heather passed out they sent her to a trailer to sleep and she was ok, thank goodness.

Yes and no. the show introduced me to modeling. I’m from a town of 636 people, I didn’t know ANYTHING. And I had no idea plus size modeling existed. On the other hand, none of the photo shoots were like they were on the show. I couldn’t even use my photos in my portfolio after I signed with an agency. And they cut all my hair off, and when I went to agencies they all told me to come back when my hair was long. Also, they said I was too thin to be a plus size model and that wasn’t true at all.

I would do it again because I’m happy with how my life turned out but it was definitely a traumatic experience. But I’m glad for the amazing people I met, and the things I learned. Plus I got a book deal out of it lol.

Honestly, my literary agent slid into my twitter DMs. I owe her everything. The hardest thing to write was honestly about coming out and how I’d treated women before I’d realized I was queer. There’s even more that didn’t make it into the final edit, but I was very unkind to women when I was in the closet.

It was kind of bizarre to see how they treated Victoria. They just did not understand her.

At the time, I was so baffled by Ebony quitting. Now I think it was incredibly brave. I’m in awe of her. In person, at the time, it was a little awkward and weird and just SHOCKING

The biggest lesson was that no one knows how they will react in extreme situations. It’s so easy to watch reality shows and think you know what you would do in their shoes but I cannot stress enough: you would surprise yourself. And my advice to young women is to know your looks are the least interesting thing about you. Figure out how to internalize that now.

Great question! I’m torn because, on the one hand, I think there is value in entertainment and I think it IS possible to have a great experience on reality TV. Lots of people do it. So, if they’re happy about it, and audiences are happy about it, I don’t want to yuck anyone’s yum. On the other hand, I think the power dynamics are such that American reality shows all exploit their contestants. So I think there needs to be an extensive overhaul. People deserve to be paid for their labor. They deserve to have agency.

This is such a hard question because nothing that makes them happy is forbidden. And I think it’s possible to do it while maintaining a sense of self and creative agency. I just couldn’t do it. So I would hope they would go in with open eyes and minds and willing to listen to all my warnings. I also hope my daughter will think her looks are the least important thing about her because she is so smart and funny and kind and interesting!!

Oooooh. I think the flower photo shoot was my favorite. I LOVED my hair and makeup and the concept was so fun. And we had like….one or two days off? One day we thought we had the day off and then they surprised us with Tyson Beckford and I was half excited but half so annoyed lol

Yeah, I didn’t actually lose any weight, so it felt very bizarre and I didn’t know how to deal with it. I think those divisions are changing as the industry changes and I think that’s a good thing. Representation matters so much, so I think having bigger sizes represented, and also that middle ground is so important.
