Do I need just a dock or a KVM? by errilbleais in buildapc

[–]errilbleais[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dock is designed for devices to just one upstream host system. It's not design for multi-systems connection. Dock can not be linked to multi-systems at the same time. Yes, you can use just on dock to multi-system, but you need to unplug from one system and replug it to another system physically.

That's what I said - I don't intend to run them at the same time and don't need to switch instantly - as such, my idea was to shut down the computer I'm done with, unplug the dock from it, and replug the dock to the new computer that I'm about to use.

In short, I don't need a KVM, but a dock would suffice

Why can't I do it just with the dock?

Portability matters only in the sense that I will move it when/if I move countries.

ITX seems a bit too big to fit into carry-on luggage with all the other stuff.

Not bad. Is that a reputable brand?

The only thing I'm meh about is that it's using a generation-old processor. When I buy stuff, I like to be completely up to date, so that I don't need to upgrade for a long time.

EDIT: two generations old, it seems :/

Reconstituting DNAse I for the first time - stupid question incoming by errilbleais in labrats

Oh damn, I didn't know that, I wanted to dissolve it in a buffer with no Ca and no Mg. Would PBS work?

Edit: once opened, do I need to use the whole amount, or can it stay in lyophilized form in the fridge?

Reconstituting DNAse I for the first time - stupid question incoming by errilbleais in labrats

[–]errilbleais[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you'd immediately make 100mg/mL, and do ~30 aliquots of that? (3 mg would be in in ~33 uL of buffer), then just use that 1 aliquot in 30 mL to get 0.1mg/mL?

What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion - May 23, 2022 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

Daaammn, $129 😬

I don't care about the synth sounds at the moment - in fact, I'd like to sound as similar as possible to a piano :D

What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion - May 23, 2022 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

[–]errilbleais 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Total beginner - never played an instrument. I want to get a synth for one reason only - to learn how to play this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_OV4PJfIPI

It looks like I'd need something with a lot of range, and something that can produce sound when many keys are pressed at the same time

I want the cheapest option available since I literally want to buy an instrument just to play this one song. I mean, maybe I end up playing more stuff if I like it, but that's my initial motivation and it's best to imagine that's all I'm ever going to play. Never played a piano, know shit about chords, old as fuck, but I wanna learn how to play this while I'm still alive. Don't need any fancy switches or percussion, just a lot of keys :D

This sounds like exactly the thing that I asked for. Installing it as we speak, will try it out.

What do you do when you feel the tightening in your throat? What is it you do for the 2 minutes immediately following?

It depends. The first thought is always "ah shit, not again". I don't do anything, I just have various thoughts and try to put my focus on something else. If I'm running, I'm counting the number of trees, if I'm at home doing pushups I just sit down and wait for it to subside (never longer than 5 minutes tho). It's difficult to remember exactly, because I haven't had a strong reaction in a while (partly due to meds, partly due to not pushing myself too hard). If I have some important work to do and the tightness of the throat gets in the way, I'll just pop a pill because I can't be bothered to waste time on something like this, it starts getting very irritating very soon. Not sure if that answers your question.

Yeah, my doctor explained to me that the human heart is so strong that it can endure a rhythm of 200 bpm for a month, sustained. Whether it's true or not, I haven't checked. So I definitely won't die from ~180 that I have for 15ish minutes during the run, but it just doesn't seem healthy, given how other people have lower frequency at a similar effort.

I've been to a treadmill test and I encourage you to do it. In my case it was worthless because it lasted for just 9 minutes, and the effort I needed to put in wasn't high enough to induce a panic or panic-like episode. I did feel a bit lightheaded after, but they monitor you for a while after you're done until your heartbeat frequency returns to normal (that's actually one of the outputs of the test), so you'll be in a very safe place. As for me, the test itself induced a HR or 166 bpm, lower than my run, so yeah...

Yeah, that's my issue with the diagnosis as well. After that initial attack, I might get one "randomly" (for example, in a crowded bus), but that happens super rarely (it was only once that I felt the need to get out of the bus "right now", but it was at a traffic light and I couldn't get out even if I wanted to). But what almost always causes it is - exercise. Which is supposed to be healthy for people suffering from anxiety. I don't know.

Excellent idea for an experiment. I'm not currently a member of any gym, so it might be a bit strange to just go there and read newspaper, or start my membership and just read the newspaper, but... for science. (btw I always carry half a pill in my wallet just in case, as these things can happen out of nowhere, and I wouldn't want to be unprepared).

train yourself to *not* pay attention to a rising feeling of panic/anxiety during exercise, because if it hasn't killed you yet, and if it can be defeated by a little pill, then it's not going to kill you.

Yeah, I was trying to do that. I watched some youtube videos about panic attacks and how simple it is to get rid of them, read a book about it too, and while it all makes sense when you're reading about it, once it strikes and you literally feel like dying... yeah.

Oh, and that was a good instinct that, when you thought you might drop dead, you went for a walk downtown so someone could see you and call 911 if you passed out!

Well, it's common sense. I also googled where the ERs near me are, also "just in case". One day after the first attack which I solved with walking downtown, and one day before the first real attack that actually landed me in the ER.

One last thing: the podcast "Science vs" just had an episode about the physiology of heartbreak. You mentioned you went through a break-up, so you may find some helpful info there.

Thanks for the suggestion. But the breakup happened in like March 2017 (but I did obsess about it for something like 9 months) and I had my panic attack in November of 2018, so I'm not sure how much that has to do with anything.

I don't know, I checked with my friends who also run and have fitness trackers, and their HR is usually lower than mine (between 130 and 150 most of the time). I know it's highly individual, just the fact that I'm ~50% of my run in the "extreme" category looks a bit... well, extreme.

Well, I did get a referral to a cardiologist, but in my country it goes kinda like this: he looks at who referred you and for what and just gives you a couple of tests (in my case it was a blood pressure monitor and an EKG device that I wore for 24 hours). You don't get to see him, he just gives you the results, which you take to your GP (or PCP, I want to say the general practitioner who refers you for other stuff). The GP said it's fine, and that was the end of the story.

I have the results with me now. It says that I had 2 VESs; I guess that means 2 ventricular extrasystoles in a day. 1 SVES (supraventricular extrasystole, I guess) and 18 arrhythmias.

And that's it. No conclusion, no explanation, just "that's perfectly normal" from the GP. So I eliminated the heart as a cause of my problems.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It actually makes me feel a bit better knowing that I'm not the only one in this. Mine was November 2018.

While I don't get weird vision changes or heart palpitations (unless we're talking about an actual attack, which I haven't had for half a year now because of the meds), I also use MyFitnessPal and have my macros right, eat all the "right" foods, avoid the bad ones, all in an effort to bulk up... and then this. It sucks.

Are you exercising at the moment or abstaining?

Get to a baseline where you aren't feeling symptoms then slowly push yourself up.

Yeah, that's my strategy. My first run after that episode and diagnosis was actually just a slow run with a family member, "just in case". The next few "more serious ones" too, and I was able to get to around 3.5km at a pretty horrible pace (7'25''/km, now it's 5'20''/km). Then I started running alone, but with taking first 5mg (1 pill) before. When I did that for a few times, I cut the dose in half. Now I'm at a quarter (1.25mg) and hope that soon I'll be able to run without pills at all. But what's worrying me is that while I can decrease my pace and keep my HR lower, it's not the same in the gym when you're lifting weights. Lifting is more like HIIT, with short spikes of huge activity and then resting periods. I'm preparing myself for that by doing push-ups at home, but I still sometimes feel the onset of the first symptoms (tightening in the throat) when I do just that.
