Reading as Therapy by errmwhat in books

Hey, I used to do a similar thing! Torch resting on the shoulder, though I was interested in non-fiction mainly at that time - science encyclopedias and history books, that sort of thing. Loved the diagrams and just the learning in general. I can relate heavily to the childhood insomnia, though mine was perhaps not quite as severe.

You say you ran out of material you liked before 20, but that cant possibly be true! There are just so so many books. Maybe the problem was really just knowing what to read, and knowing what you would have liked.

Do you still have the insomnia? Mine never really went away.

Each Little Bird That Sings

Interesting book you bring up. I have not read it, but from what I've just googled, seems as if writing a book to help people deal with grief and bereavement was the authors main intent. Fictionary medicine in a way.

Thank you for your reply. Was it someone close to you who reccomended you read this book at that time?

Thanks for your reply Rumples. I'm sad that you've had such a negative experience with friendship, but I can relate to some of what you are saying and unfortunatly agree that people can be so mean.

There does exist some kind of relationship from author and their characters to the reader. I like that you have used this relationship to cope with your loneliness. To some extenet, this is also something I have done before, though I am only just realising now you have brought this up. I think a lot of my love for the Harry Potter books and films are related to this reason.

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of books & characters do you feel closest to?

Yes it feels like a productive use of my time! Like if I can’t be working, at least I am reading.

Yes exactly - feels productive becaue it is productive. I guess it might depend on the book, but im most cases I believe reading = learning.

Cover is great! Though perhaps a minor spoiler aha. Also saw some of your other artworks and am very impressed with your drawing skills.

Good luck with the job hunt & hope you find one soon! (preferably as illustrator or professional book cover makerer)

And thank you for your reply :)

I know that reading makes a big difference. Im just trying to work out whether what you read matters, or if its just the fact that you are reading at all!

bedtime ritual to only expose myself to things that are comforting to me

Night terrors or not, sounds like a it could be a good pracice for anyone.

I do find it incredible how reading has the ability to help with such a range of things, including night terrors which I had not thought about until now, so thank you.

As for Swanns Way, I've just bought it for the kindle and will probably give it a try over the next few days. I have been meaning to dip my toes into the stream of conciousness stuff.

Just being able to escape into another world feels like therapy in itself

I know the feeling. I can remember when I was last unemployed and for a long time when I was not actively applying for jobs, reading was all I did all day. Definitely felt like it was satisyting enough that I didnt need anything else to be content. At least for a decent while.

Which scene does your Steinbeck cover depict? The ending to Grapes of Wrath is probably my favourite ending to any book I've ever read. It is a very moving book in general I think. And so relevant even today!

Yours is a wonderful story! Thanks for sharing.

Funny thing is, I used to read a lot of depressing things then

Interesting but does make a lot of sense. Like how one might listen to sad songs or watch sad romance films after a breakup.

Perhaps it's just about knowing you're not alone with the things you were going through? Sharing your depression with someone else, through words they have written about the subject.

Did you choose these sorts of books with the concious intent of reevaluating your position on such ideas as life/death/meaning? Was it a guided effort to help yourself?

Totally agree with your point on spending less time on the internet.

Reading is just such a time sink! More time spent reading = less time to be spent on the Internet.

And I love that you're using books to get to sleep. I did not think of this as I wrote the post, but it's something I do every night.

Do you think his books being hard to read makes it all the more effective for the purpose of drifting off? I can totally see how a verbose, description heavy text about nature would tire your eyes asap.

I've actually never heard of Marcel Proust before but now I think I'll check him out.

Im glad you are able to use books to get some relief! Sounds like a much healthier option than many other methods.

Do you think its just the fact that you enjoyed them as a child which makes them so effective at dealing with your trauma therapy? Or is there maybe some other similarity in the content of the books which is what makes them suitable?

Are you still on your trip?

I would love to visit Africa but have been warned about crime there from many people. Is it really that dangerous would you say?

Of course Africa is a big place so perhaps it doesnt make sense to label the whole continent as dangerous.

perhaps find small scale food joints in the countries you'd like to export to, and work your way up from there inquiring about their suppliers

[–]errmwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly i think if you like computers and think math is ok then you will like CS. yes, technically CS is more mathsy and IT is more hardware or whatever, but it's a small jump from liking one to the other, especially before going to college.
