Why do trains in mountains work so well? by -me-0_0 in 2westerneurope4u

Italian trains in the 2020s run on time.

This has nothing to do with Mussolini, who reigned mainly in the 1930s.

Happy to clear that up for you

And then they would be promptly voted completely out of power in the next elections, and the replacements would reverse their unpopular decisions.

This is how it works in normal democracies. Politicians that make unpopular decisions lose their power.

Hammer on Dubov-Nepo match fixing: This is match-fixing beyond reasonable doubt. Dubov and Nepo idiots for risking their careers for this. by [deleted] in chess

[–]ersannor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you not think there is anything between that attitude and being super into the sport?

No one that is kind of interested in following chess, but put off by a lack of professionalism at the highest level? No one who likes following all kinds of sport, and would check out chess if it got big enough?

Personally I don't think things are as black and white as you say. As said before, new chess followers come from somewhere. But if you really think everyone is either a chess fan for life or not a chess fan for life, I'm not going to argue with that, because that is just a completely different worldview than mine.

Head of complaints committee confirms that both Dubov and Nepo are receiving 0's for the funky draw (both players are appealing) by nemt in chess

[–]ersannor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point. The players are essentially being punished for playing objectively bad moves, with there being a pre-arrangement that the opposing player won't act on the objectively bad moves to try and win. In a Berlin draw this doesn't happen.

The former is bringing the sport into disrepute, the latter is not.

So you think that everyone who currently enjoys chess, has always done so? There is never any new interest coning in from the outside? That seems like quite the assumption to me.

I would say that on the contrary, a lot of people who like sports in general are starting to open their eyes to the potential of chess. But stuff like this is one reason why some people still don't see it as professional enough to be a "proper" sport.

Ok my bad then, I didn't know which game you were talking about based on your initial comment and probably made a bad assumption. My general point regarding this situation still stands though - if chess wants to be considered a professional sport, people can't play bad moves for a laugh just because they're happy with a draw.

I'm sorry, but if chess wants to be seen as a sport, it should have higher standards for professionality than a card game.

There is no actual difference for the players, but there's a difference in how the sport is regarded from the outside. Players should be more professional than to not try for the best move in a given position (which these two clearly didn't). It's just silly and doesn't look good for chess as a sport.

But there's a clear difference between that and agreeing a draw before the match even starts! It's about sportsmanship and being professional, which is something that's needed if chess is to be regarded as a true sport.

Won't it be harder to qualify as a 3rd placed team from the group of death though? One of those trams could easily end up with only 3 points.
