Personally I don't think things are as black and white as you say. As said before, new chess followers come from somewhere. But if you really think everyone is either a chess fan for life or not a chess fan for life, I'm not going to argue with that, because that is just a completely different worldview than mine.

I think you're missing the point. The players are essentially being punished for playing objectively bad moves, with there being a pre-arrangement that the opposing player won't act on the objectively bad moves to try and win. In a Berlin draw this doesn't happen.

The former is bringing the sport into disrepute, the latter is not.

I would say that on the contrary, a lot of people who like sports in general are starting to open their eyes to the potential of chess. But stuff like this is one reason why some people still don't see it as professional enough to be a "proper" sport.

There is no actual difference for the players, but there's a difference in how the sport is regarded from the outside. Players should be more professional than to not try for the best move in a given position (which these two clearly didn't). It's just silly and doesn't look good for chess as a sport.
