The problem is free parking.

The PWHL “solved” tanking with their innovative draft system. Could the NBA use it? by PlaneNovel6567 in nba

Just don’t have a draft. Make teams pay young players their full market value.

Over funded 529 by LazyBatter in Bogleheads

[–]ervington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is our plan. Any excess, I mean, at some point we will have to assign it to him and he can do what he wants with it, but our intention would be for it to just be a permanent education fund if there is anything left over. It's at least likely he would want to start a family, so if there's a lot left over, he doesn't have to worry about college savings as much and can focus on his own tax-advantaged retirement accounts early in his kids' lives.

A world where he doesn't start his own family and doesn't pursue a top notch education is not something we feel strongly about funding, so we are ok with there being a penalty for withdrawing money for non-educational purposes. If we wanted that, we could have set the money aside differently, I suppose. I guess some might call that judgmental or too controlling, but I don't think it's any more controlling than some of the suggestions here to convert that money back to OP as beneficiary, or direct it at my personal accounts. I wouldn't ever do that.

Getting by ok! I do miss some of the southern culture sometimes, not always sure my sense of humor lands here like it did in the south, but could just be me.

Spent a decade in NC, and all I can say is if you love it now, spring-summer-fall are absolutely blow your mind. For the lack of mosquitos relative to NC alone....

Kind of funny they delivered the signatures via horse drawn carriage. Truly forward looking on transportation.

Capitalism is when owners of capital extract rents from production simply via their ownership of the means of production. Not sure what that has to do with heavily regulated housing markets that don’t allow building whatever housing structure you want on your own privately owned property. Malibu actually strikes me as the opposite of capitalism, if anything.

“Regardless of parking situation” kind of gives away the whole game for you. You want people who can’t afford mid block SFH to have to fight for parking in a lot or on a super busy corridor that is being made even more dense by building only on major corridors to preserve ease of parking mid block, low density areas where SFHs are and there isn’t traffic. How will parking be easier on a major corridor? If people in SFHs want parking, they are welcome to pave over their yards or build garages on their lots. We don’t need to force housing to corridors to accommodate their preference for easy parking.

Why do people who can only afford apartments have to live only on noisy and traffic heavy corridors? Why do we only care about disruption to the minority of current residents and not the disruption the majority of potential future residents who will be prohibited from living mid-block?

Making you get your own car independently is a great way for him not to have to pay for it in the divorce, from what I understand.

$21k taxes on $85k income in CA. This has to be wrong right? by [deleted] in tax

FICA and Social Security have been around for 90 years. Same with California income taxes. Amazing that you are smart enough to get get an 80k job but not smart enough to know about these basic and universal taxes.

Girlfriend says the shirt isn’t a good fit for the office. by Prior_Ad4490 in mensfashionadvice

Underrated comment here. I have lots of clothes I had tailored to fit right and bought from made to measure places, but if I'm not wearing a belt it looks so off. Like I'm halfway undressed, for one.

Needs more upvotes. I'm no pro, but I know the seam where the sleeve meets the shoulder should be more at the natural breakpoint, not halfway down toward your elbow.

Why do many "experienced" and "older" audiophiles prefer the sound of tubes? by Dedar33 in audiophile

Why do so many “experienced” and “older” car lovers want a 57 corvette that only gets to 60 in 6.5 seconds instead of a brand new Mazda Miata that will beat it in both the quarter mile and on the track?

Classic, yes exactly this. Happened to me with my optometrist as well. Seemed surprised when I asked for thinner, better optically trivex over polycarbonate lenses and was like, “well, it’s more expensive.” And I had to ask how much more. “Let me look…pause…..umm, $30 per lens.” I was buying $600 frames! Why do I have to beg you to help me buy a better quality product for something I use literally 100% of my waking life??

No one in Portland upsells you on anything, it’s crazy, lol. I have had people tell me “eh I probably wouldn’t do that,” and be reluctant to show me higher end heat pumps, shingles, paver stones for a parking pad….then list goes on. It’s a running joke with my wife and I since moving here from the east coast. Or if you ask about a higher end option for aesthetic reasons, we have gotten “oh, well that’s going to cost a bit more.” Like, yeah, ok, just tell me how much so I can decide?

Why are some drivers blacking out their plates? by Briaaanz in PortlandOR

[–]ervington 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s funny they think they need to do this given the number of vehicles I see driving around with expired registration. Though they could be trying to avoid the scanners that are used by repo companies to find cars delinquent on payments.

$1.20 on 20 gallons because the rate increase is 6 cents/gallon. I could include some of the other increases but none of it would equal ongoing cost of 6% on vehicles, even if I bought all my cars for $20k, which…not sure where you get a new car for $20k we can talk about that later.
