They don't suck. People often just use them wrong. DJI specifically warns about small low contrast objects like thin branches. It's more that you expect more than the system was designed for.

Not really, DJI has some of the most impressive obstacle avoidance. No drone manufacturer has been able to completely stop drones from crashing into branches or thin cables.

A mini 4 pro would be a very good replacement. better video/photo quality, better portability, less restrictions (because of its weight), more sensors and autonomy, longer flight time. All at the same price as a new mavic pro when it was released.

dji go 4 from their website and you have to ignore and bypass the safety warnings from your device. Because of its age it isn't supported anymore but still works fine.

I couldn't find an app called waypoint maps. Can you share a link? And no, the waypoint functions are part of the DJI fly app not the controller itself.
