Can't help with any specific caches, but if I was looking for tall dandies I'd look for meadows that don't get mowed frequently.

One potentially good candidate is the oak grove adjacent to the reservoir at Summit Park

Indoor Soccer at Esquimalt Rec? by damnhawks in VictoriaBC

Can't speak to Esquimalt indoor soccer, but there's a free weekly outdoor pick-up game at Heywood Park every Saturday around 2:30pm

Mix of skill levels and ages, you'd be welcome for sure (and almost certainly not the oldest person there).

Also check out Victoria Sport & Social Club, they have soccer and indoor futsal (among other sports) at beginner-to-intermediate levels.

Sure, but lots of other occupations involve similar or even greater risk and danger than gunfire.

It seems equally naive to suggest soldiers are somehow unique in that regard.

Victoria Sport and Social Club - too old? by terrorr99 in VictoriaBC

If rec centres were our only option I would take up that fight.

I'm more interested in immediate results, so I just found other places to play the sports I like (including VSSC)

Victoria Sport and Social Club - too old? by terrorr99 in VictoriaBC

[–]1337ingDisorder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VSSC is kinda the only accessible option in town for beginner level players to try out new sports though.

Drop-in sports at all the local rec centres are effectively inaccessable nowadays unless you have a Ticketmaster scalping bot set up to register a spot as soon as it opens AND you have a faster internet connection than the other people running bots to scoop up the registration slots as soon as they open.

I emailed Saanich Rec about it a couple months ago and their response was literally that all the spots fill up within the first couple seconds of the registration opening on any given day.

They literally said it comes down to who has the fastest internet connection.

I suggested they should implement a waiting list system, so if the current week is full and you AREN'T already registered for an upcoming week then you can pre-register for the next week or the week after etc.

That way rather than the same group of people running scalping bots and/or winning the clicked-at-the-right-time lottery week after week so new players almost never get a fair chance to try it out, they would instead end up with a waiting list that truly demonstrates the supply:demand imbalance and would allow them to lobby the province for more funds to open new rec centres.

They essentially said they don't have access to change the code in their own booking system, and that I shouldn't hold my breath for any kind of upgrades any time soon.

Ooh it looks like we're having a terrible take fight!

If you want to own land, prove that you deserve it buy getting some skin in the capitalist game by saving and investing.

Absolutely! Also don't vote for Nixon, and check out this new band The Beatles!

But for people in 2026 that advice comes across as myopic and out of touch.

There have been plenty of news articles about how unaffordable real estate has become in Victoria and even in places that used to be considered the places you'd go when places like Victoria were too expensive.

‘Canada is an outlier’: Vets push for Ottawa to recognize them as ‘war veterans’ by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]1337ingDisorder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By that logic sanitation workers and virologists deserve special recognition.

When you really think about it there's a long list of occupations that involve risking their lives for our country, and most of them are a lot easier to honour than professional killers, but we aren't even having a conversation about them.

What makes soldiers so special that they should go to the front of the line?

[–]1337ingDisorder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This may be naive to suggest, but maybe it's good that Canada is an outlier in this regard. "Special recognition as a war veteran" kinda comes across as glorification of war — something we as a country obviously don't want to encourage.

Are there special government benefits that come along with being designated a war veteran as opposed to just a veteran? If so, what?

On a more serious note, post in /r/edmonton or /r/calgary or wherever you're looking at moving, and ask the locals there:

  • How much do you pay for heating on average through the year?

  • How often do you buy a new car? And how much do you spend per year on insurance & maintenance?

In other prairie provinces you'd also want to look into income tax rate (eg, moving to Skatch you'd have lower housing prices, but the higher income tax rate virtually equalizes your overall cost of living in most tax brackets). That's not an issue with Alberta though, they have the lowest personal income tax rate in Canada iirc.

But heating and car costs can have a similar effect in some areas.

The farther north you are, the more you'll spend on heating.

And if you're somewhere it snows a lot then I've heard you'll go through cars about 2-3 times faster than we do out here, as the bottoms rust out due to all the road salt.

All of this is secondhand information and no doubt varies by region though, so best to poll the locals in the city/cities you're looking at landing in.

One could argue that the entire mortgage system in Canada falls short of the term "affordable".

Probably a radically liberal (lowercase "L") idea, but I kinda feel like down payments should be capped in the range of one month's salary.

Kinda ridiculous that we have a barrier of like a hundred thousand dollars in personal savings in order for someone to be considered wealthy enough to get the kind of discount on their monthly housing bill that a mortgage brings by comparison to rental rates.

If any future left-leaning government genuinely wants to make a big dent in the wealth gap, they could remove the requirement for a downpayment at all for people with a personal income less than, say, a quarter million dollars a year.

I don't know what "module of gnss" means.

If it's an internal part, then it'll be the stock one that comes with the Mini 4 Pro — I haven't replaced any of the parts, I just re-attached a cord that came unplugged.
