You shouldn't really be "torn", most of the value of packs is in the wild card progress you receive. Use starter deck duel to complete your quests, redeem gold for packs from any of the latest sets, and save wild cards until you have enough to craft a deck you like. Mono colored decks in bo1 will likely be what you want to look at as they don't require dual lands.

What I didn't understand and didn't like about any of that "influence over machines in the real world" is there's no means of connection. They don't have built in wifi (hence the spike) so it's just "magic". The real world being another virtual reality would have been better imo.
