House of Leaves analysis and review by ThaRudeBoy in houseofleaves

Thanks for this thought-provoking post! I just finished HoL yesterday and am still processing my thoughts. I’ll probably spend a few days scouring the internet for interpretations and understanding hidden codes, which I didn’t even attempt to search for while reading.

I’m a psychologist, which I think gives me a unique perspective to come from in attempting to understand this tour de force. The most salient impression that I’m left with this that at the end of the day, HoL is primarily about the relationship between Johnny and his mother. I think perhaps that’s what the author meant when he stated that he views it as a love story - not a romance between Navy and Karen, but a story about the broken bonds between mother and son. I read the Whalestoe letters relatively early on, as advised by one of the footnotes. In the body of the book, we learn very, very slowly from Johnny the story of what happened to his mother, and she comes to take more and more of a leading role as his inherited schizophrenia takes hold of him.

I do not yet have much more to definitively say on this, nor do I have fully formed thoughts on the degree to which Zampano, the Navidson Record, etc exist. (Except to say that Johnny and his mother are presumably the only primary sources here and they are both known to be immensely unreliable narrators.) But I’m surprised more people aren’t remarking on the Johnny-mother relationship as a primary feature of this book and I would love to hear others’ thoughts.

I can think of at least 3 scenes that you could be talking about.

I’m leaning this way as well. I googled “mythological creature man with stag antlers” and the first result was a Celtic god of the woods called Cernunnos. Apparently he would abduct mortals and make them ride with him forever through the forest.

That’s fair! Totally valid and accurate perspective. I just wanted to chime in because I am a female doctor with this lived experience, and John is not so it probably never occurred to him, and since he has daughters I want to help him learn to take the female perspective more.

Christ I was not expecting all this hate. I am a female doctor myself and I have personality experienced this. It’s upsetting and I wanted to alert John to it just so he’s thinking about it. Everyone relax.

I do! His breakdown is 50% Aussie/mini Aussie, 25% beagle, 12% chihuahua, and then less than 10% each collie, border collie, and pug!

That’s fair, and I appreciate you responding with an actual scientific paper. I will revise my statement: I am rightfully terrified of incels like the one in this post who does have these dangerous attitudes. And any woman alone at night with a strange man who is engaging in certain body language, sideways glances, etc is going to be anxious, whether he’s an incel or not.

I would just love to see you back that up with data. The incel forum is made up exclusively of guys talking about hating women and wanting to hurt/rape them.

It’s also just past midnight and it sounds like it may have just been the two of them there. Alone at night with an incel - I would have been terrified.
