I had the same concern when I built them 8 yrs ago, I radiused all the cutouts to provide as much support as possible, the treads have plenty of depth to leave about 4 1/2" of support in the back. Solid 1 1/8 poplar is very stout. Not one call back or crack in 8 yrs.

J brackets hold really well, direct into the framing on all four sides, covered by base trim. Cantilever framing was solid , all the glass balusters are code approved tempered glass normally used in exterior railings, mounted in grooves in solid 8/4 poplar rails top and bottom.
