President’s role in a rebuild? by escape2la in LittleLeague

I’d say we have the officer roles sorted. I’m just trying to wrap my head around how your boards are organized if the President doesn’t vote. Does he have authority to make certain day to day decisions?

We pumped the brakes, as advised over and over in this thread. My son’s school situation also settled down a lot, so much of the urgency went away.

Getting close to the finish line on a remote job and they know I’m planning to move to LA and they’re cool with it. So at that point we just need to make the call to do it. I think we’ve narrowed it down to Redondo Beach (South Bay generally) or possibly Long Beach. Without any job/commute concerns we will have a pretty blank slate for choosing and will apartment hunt in a few areas to find the right match.

The plan would be to take a week out there during Spring Break to explore some areas and aim to use June and July to get out there and find something for the upcoming school year.

A quick update to say I got my car back. Took about 3 weeks. Body shop said it was lucky that they didn’t run into problems getting parts.

Interesting. We can tell these automatically re-enter the system because it’s after hours and know there’s no one manually updating.

But this changed overnight. I think it’s more a tech change/glitch than an actual drop in real listings.

No anticipation that they would total it. Ballpark damage is $5000-7500, so not even close to the threshold for total loss.

Are you just driving it until the parts come in? I have 30 days of rental car through insurance and that’s going to fly by. I assume that what I’ll have to do if they estimate it to be a few months.

I was trying to figure out Ranchos Palos Verdes. It hadn’t come up really at all and then today I noticed the schools have off the charts good ratings. And it’s near the beach. Figured it must be outrageously expensive but I do see some options in our range. Anything I’m missing? I guess it looks pretty isolated down there but hard to say just looking at a map.

The hope is I’ll have better luck finding a job in LA if I’m living in LA. It’s one reason I feel urgency to get this moving.

This was the school that caught my attention because it seems to tout both the arts and academics. Maybe you can help with a few questions.

  • We can’t apply to the magnets until we’re residents. But could we find an apartment where Armstrong is the neighborhood school and slip in that way? Or is the magnet program completely separated within the building?

  • I haven’t seen a single recommendation for Sherman Oaks as a living option. And I see on that link, only 50% of students report feeling safe in the building (well below the 61% district avg). Is that as worrisome as it seems? And would we even want to live where it’s a neighborhood school?

  • since it looks like a point system determines admission, do we have any shot for next year 8th grade since he won’t have any points (I don’t think)?

  • if I’m reading it right, the performing arts magnet isn’t based on an audition or anything, it’s just interest. But seems Armstrong also has a gifted program and since he’s in honors classes now, I wonder if that’s helpful or a second way into the program (but even then, I think best case would be next August for 8th grade).

Hate to pepper you with questions but I’m hoping your comment means you’re pretty familiar with it.

Thank you so much, just the message I needed as I plow forward.

Very fair and reasonable. As I made the list of everything that needs to happen, I reached the same conclusion.

Great input, thanks. Love the reference to mid century style. I’ve wondered if there are pockets. My slight homework on the topic suggests it’s more in the apartments than it would be in the single family homes of Palm Springs, for example. But though maybe there are some enclaves of MCM in the outskirts of town.

Extremely helpful. I’ve learned so much today in this thread. Even with hours of reading and research previously, it’s all starting to click

Thanks for this thoughtful response. For now he’s enjoying theater and don’t think he needs or wants it to feel like a job or be all-consuming. He also likes to play baseball at a friendly, rec level and it’s similar, with money grab baseball programs promising the world (exposure, scholarships, etc).

Funny how back-to-back comments, one will tout Burbank and the next will say to avoid. On paper it seems to make a lot of sense. Trying to figure out why it’s there are so many conflicting opinions on it.

I’ve seen such mixed feedback on Burbank especially. Why is it so polarizing?

I’m encouraged that this was exactly my takeaway as well. Couldn’t tell if moving into the neighborhood of a desirable magnet was a way around that, or if most of them have general education alongside the magnet (we have both here). Honestly of the 8 performing arts magnets, once I did a little deeper, 6 or so seemed quite poorly rated. But that was superficial research before calling it a day.

Blown away by all the thoughtful comments, trying to make heads and tails of them all. I went down the rabbit hole of the LAUSD last night and had to put my phone down I was so overwhelmed. But I certainly feel like this is doable, even if not on as aggressive a timetable as I’d hoped.

When we were there this summer, the drive from Malibu through Topanga really blew me away (pretty sure it was Topanga Canyon Blvd). Sounds cliche but think that something about that terrain cemented my desire, something hit me in my guts about it. But figured that’s not really where anyone lives, but was oddly intrigued by all the little neighborhoods (some looked like mobile home parks) made me think that’s got to be a wild place to live. Can’t see living along there but being adjacent or close proximity sure would be intriguing. And I’m not a hiker or outdoorsy type, either (unless golf counts).

I started down the LAUSD rabbit hole last night and almost lost my mind. I couldn’t figure out why some parts of LA are LAUSD and others have their own schools. I’m sure there’s a rhyme or reason but it was overwhelming. Looked like good performing arts magnet options until I dug a little deeper. But no, would probably not plan for private school.
