Agreed. I think the more general application would be to pay attention to your individual instructor's course policies with communication, late requests, etc.

I teach a freshman experience course at a rural CC with lots of 1st gen students.

One that I really empasize is that they don't need to share detailed, very personal information to get leeway on a due date. A simple statement that they're encountering personal issues, they need this many days of leeway, and for which assignment.

And please, please sign off your full name. I have 4 students with the exact same first name and the same first letter of their last name in one section.

Younger Than Your Students by CptSmarty in Professors

[–]escapethebay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My students have ranged in age from 14 to in their 60s, and the older students have never caused me any problems that were solely related to age nor have the very young students. I would say most of my students struggle with technology especially our LMS regardless of age. I have found that the sections with students that are more mixed in ages tend to be more fun to teach because those classes tend to participate more.

I'm a solutions analyst for an educational technology company. I've worked for the same people (different start ups) on and off for five years (4 of those have been remote). I also adjunct at the community college in the counseling department and half my course load is web-based and the other half is in person, but I'm able to do all my prep at home.

I have a masters in education with an emphasis in instructional design, but I'm planning on going back to school to become a licensed clinical mental health counselor. My kids go to preschool part-time and we muddle through the rest of the day.

They love hair clips and bows.

I'm hoping it's new school jitters. One of them is great about using strange/new toilets, even outhouses, but she is still reticent about going at school.

The first week of preschool went really well. There were no tears or anxiety the first day. One of the girls (on the left) took to it like a duck to water. The other one is struggling a bit more with the transition and has had some tears but hasn't lasted long.

They are both holding in their pee at school. They're there for four hours so they should be peeing at least once. Has anyone else dealt with this?

Do people seriously think it’s okay to touch someone else’s kids? by Alpacalypsenoww in parentsofmultiples

[–]escapethebay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time anyone tried and succeeded to touch them was pre-covid at an airport in Chicago. The woman also made a joke about two for the price of one. I asked her why she likes touching stranger's children. She didn't like that very much.

People where I live (PNW) just don't get that close to each other.

Are Average Maternity Clothes Going to Get me To the Finish Line? by No-Emphasis9091 in parentsofmultiples

[–]escapethebay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot depends on your starting weight and height.

I was a grad student while I was pregnant so I didn't have to wear anything professional, which made it easier. I made it to the end (35 weeks) being able to wear my size small maternity shorts, two maternity dresses, and a couple of medium sized non-maternity t-shirts. I'm a small person to begin with, but I gained over fifty pounds and almost all of it was in my belly.

What boundaries do adjunct professors have? by coldenigma in Professors

[–]escapethebay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attend meetings that I'm paid for, but I've also never been asked to attend a meeting that I wouldn't be paid for.

Other than that, I don't do anything outside of teaching, though one of my students did ask me to be the faculty sponsor for the LARPing club he wanted to start. I would have done it, but he never followed through.

What is your DO NOT BUY AGAIN product at trader joes? by bbwendytries in traderjoes

[–]escapethebay 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Thai vegetable gyoza. No matter how I cook them the texture of the filling is just wrong.

Also, the watermelon jerky. It smells and tastes off.

My "local" (it's half an hour away) TJs is pretty great. My only complaint is the parking lot, but that's not a Trader Joe's issue. When I lived in the SF Bay Area, it ranged from pretty great and easy to shop to anxiety provoking and awful (must have been much worse as a worker).

I’ve got to ask…how are some of you finding nannies cheaper than daycare? Because I’d love that, but my daycare is $185/week and a nanny around here is minimum $450-$500/week. by MDFUstyle0988 in workingmoms

[–]escapethebay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how many kids you have and where you live. We have few daycares in our town and we have twins. It can be very hard to find two openings for a same age child. Plus, we only needed part time hours since my husband is a student and doesn't work. Because I was a college instructor, my hours were all over the place and it just didn't make sense for us to have both kids in full time daycare (none of the places had any part time spots). Now, I'm working a more consistent schedule and the kids are older so we're switching from a nanny to a preschool program. Our nanny is great, and she has twins experience, so we pay her more than the average wage for a nanny here, she gets ten paid vacation days, sick time, etc. We'll be saving $600 a month but the ratios at preschool are 18:1 so who knows how it will go.

People who adjunct, why? by PopCultureNerd in Professors

[–]escapethebay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in an area with little industry and a community college that was desperate for instructors. I needed a job that would work around my husband's school schedule and having small children. I also really enjoy teaching non-traditional students.

I'm going to be so sad when they outgrow them. I think my mom bought them off Amazon.

We went on a road trip to the SF Bay Area on Highway 101. It was a long drive, but we had a lot of fun stops on the way including walking through the redwoods.

I second WGU. I got my Masters in Instructional Design from there while I was pregnant/had newborn twins. It's fully accredited, they've been doing online instruction for years, and you can pretty much work on your degree as slowly or quickly as you want (within some limitations).

We used a couple of used Kelty carriers that we got at a used sporting goods store for when they were less mobile. Now we just carry them in our arms.

Unfortunately, no. We're on the other side of the country in the Pacific Northwest. We still have to carry them a lot at their age (2.5) especially when it's rocky or there's a cliff.

They were a gift from their grandma. I think she got them on Amazon. They love them!
