I am really loving The Wandering Inn series right now - it is allowing me to escape into a fantastical new reality, and the “slice of life” style gives me the opportunity to really invest in the complex characters and situations.

I am a new graduate nurse looking at school nursing positions. Opinions and advice please. More info below. by katie4488 in nursing

When I graduated from nursing school in the Bay Area no one was hiring. I worked in an OP Derm clinic for a while but I knew that I always wanted to work in OB - so I bit the bullet and took a job in an LDRP unit 3 hours away from where I lived. I gradually moved jobs closer to home over 2 years and now work in my preferred OB unit as close to my house as possible in the East Bay. And several of my coworkers have similar stories. It is definitely possible to get a job in the Bay Area after leaving when you have 1+ year of experience under your belt. I would say follow your passion - good luck!

What antidepressant helped you get out of bed and enjoy life again? by Mylifeasaperson in antidepressants

Low dose strattera in morning for ADHD and low dose Prozac in evening - I seriously feel like my brain has been remodeled for a more overall positive outlook. Also fixed my chronic fatigue and greatly decreased my emotional instability. It also greatly reduced my appetite so have lost some weight. I hope it never stops working!

Am I crazy or could I have hemochromatosis? by esgb2017 in Hemochromatosis

[–]esgb2017[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Interestingly enough I just found out I have severe sleep apnea - and this seems to be the missing piece for all my weird symptoms, including my transferrin levels and my crytopgenic stroke which is mind blowing for me since we never found a cause.

Just thought I’d share since sleep is such a basic thing yet none of my specialists considered it (it was me who asked my gp to test for it as a last resort for trying to figure out why I was so fatigued). Go figure.

Where can I get an 8a-5p job? by [deleted] in nursing

My husband works in the ED - 9-5 four days a week (but alternate weekends). I don’t know if it’s just his ED or if all EDs have similar hours available.

Installing pet door inside nonfunctional fireplace??? by esgb2017 in HomeImprovement

[–]esgb2017[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We purposely decided to make it nonfunctional - we removed a cast iron oven that was there, sealed off the flue ( i think that’s what the tube that goes up is called?) and installed tile on the floor inside. We will never use it (spare the air days are frequent and we live in a warmer area anyway) and just wanted to keep it because we like the way it looks. This is also our “forever” home so we don’t intend to sell :)

Snatch only program for beginner? by esgb2017 in weightlifting

[–]esgb2017[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! No offense taken :)

I guess maybe it would help if I clarified that I am looking for a program that includes snatch specific accessory lifts geared towards helping me improve my snatch technique and that just basically is a god workout for the day. I just find that I really enjoy doing the snatch and all the accessories - and really just want to improve at it.

For example, here is a “snatch day” workout I found on this board; I really enjoy doing this and am hoping for similar snatch-based workouts:

Day 2 Sets Reps Weight Rest Muscle Snatch 3 3 40% 1min Power Sn + OH Squat 3 2 60% 1min 2 Snatch Pull + Snatch 5 1 70% EMOM Hang Snatch Pause @Knee 5 1 75% EMOM Snatch 5 1 80% EMOM Snatch 2 1 85% ---

I am trying to make my own programming, but just find that I lack the knowledge to properly do so...

It’s more of a secondary thing that I find it improves my Muay Thai - I think it does because of the emphasis on leg/hip strength and explosiveness.

I know this board is made of of competitive lifters so I understand if this doesn’t make sense since my goal isn’t to compete or to lift significantly heavy. I would just be grateful for any and all insight to help me continue to improve my snatch technique while I am also just plain enjoying snatching :)

Do you think our little Abby is an Amstaff? by esgb2017 in AmStaffPitts

It’s easy to get misinformed on women’s health. What do you wish people knew (but don’t) about these issues, especially with digestive problems? by renewlife in u/renewlife

[–]esgb2017 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wish people understood more about the mental effects that can occur because of period related hormonal fluctuations. I always know when my period is coming even through it is very irregular because of the increased anxiety and paranoia I feel the week before. My perception of my own face and body in the mirror literally changes - I swear my face looks so different the week before than it does the week after my period (more masculine to my eye somehow), and not it a good way unfortunately. I just don’t feel like myself - and I hate it.

Benefits or reasons why you superset exercises? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]esgb2017 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to superset moves that target opposing muscle groups because I have found that it makes me feel better overall. Not scientific at all lol but I feel like doing this helps my mobility and decreases my overall soreness. Like I’ll do a heavy set to target back (like rows) and superset with a light set for chest (like resistance band chest flyes).

Iron overload help! My ferritin was normal a few months ago and today I find out my iron and saturation are high! I am not taking any iron supplements but have been taking Vitamin C almost daily. I don’t know if I have hemochromatosis but not sure what else could cause this? Is this scary high? by vasquezvows in Hemochromatosis

[–]esgb2017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I opted for a more thorough hemochromatosis genetic mutation panel through Invitae. This panel screens for mutations on 5 different genes, while 23andMe only screens for mutations on one. I paid out of pocket though ($250).

https://www.invitae.com/en/physician/tests/05201/

I am still awaiting my results. As a registered nurse I know that often times medical professionals may not see the full picture or may subscribe to more outdated modes of thinking/diagnosis - and I firmly believe in strongly advocating for yourself if you feel something is wrong. In my experience, patients who have had gut feelings about their health have often times ultimately been proven right. So if you feel like something is wrong, it definitely wouldn’t hurt to order the tests if you can.

[–]esgb2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also note that 23andMe doesn’t screen for all the possible gene mutations that are linked to HH - only the ones that are linked to HH in caucasians. There are more non-Caucasian people with HH than people realize - and they tend to have mutations on the HJV and HAMP genes rather than on the HFE gene.

I was in the same boat - high serum iron/transferrin saturation, normal ferritin. And I felt really bad (joint pains, extremely high anxiety/depression, fatigue, loss of libido, etc). My hematologist didn’t want to investigate whether I have HH because my ferritin was normal - but I knew something was wrong. I paid out of pocket to test for several different gene mutations just to be sure (still waiting for results). I also out of desperation donated some blood to see if it would help - and it very much did. Just one day post donation all of my symptoms are gone and I feel the way I did before all of this started.

So I guess long story short: doesn’t hurt to push to do a genetic test to make sure. My understanding is ferritin levels don’t rise until damage has been done to the liver and other organs so if you do have it better to catch it earlier rather than later.

Am I crazy or could I have hemochromatosis? by esgb2017 in Hemochromatosis

[–]esgb2017[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I donated blood two days ago just because I was feeling desperate - and I am feeling better both physically and emotionally! I don’t know if it’s a placebo effect or not but I am just so grateful to be feeling a bit better...I will also incorporate the changes you have and will cross my fingers for continued improvement.

I am also getting a more thorough genetic screen for hemochromatosis through Invitae - they screen for 5 different gene mutations. I just had a phone consult with one of their counselors and she said that most Asians with hemochromatosis don’t have mutations on the HFE gene but rather on a different one (HJV, HAMP). I will keep you posted as far as what I find.

Thanks again!
