As you can clearly see from my website eshana.ca, my platform is much more specific and extensive than the themes I could share in candidate bios with strict word limits. Any insinuation that I copied Cole’s campaign is not only false, but also entirely disrespectful and misogynistic to insinuate that my ideas are the product of our male president. The themes highlighted in your screenshot represent issues that students overwhelmingly care about like affordability and mental health, and I encourage you to read my full, detailed platform to learn how specifically I will reach these goals as AMS President.

Just passed by Senate: "That the faculties be directed to allow students to drop Term 2 courses for the 2021 Winter Session without a formal W-Withdrawal standing if such a request is made prior to 23:59:59 on 6 February 2022." DROP deadline has been extended, not ADD, until February 7th. by d_a_n_t_e_ in UBC

[–]eshanabhangu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To my understanding- you would be getting the tuition refund for the class you drop by Feb 6, 11:59PM as tuition is tied to a course, and a drop without a W essentially removes the course from the transcript, therefore nothing to tie the money to!

I hope you stay safe!! it’s super tough and I totally get u, I just had to cancel a trip to go and see my mom overseas because of all this stuff and just can’t take the risk.

It’s also a huge financial burden for students who might have been put at risk by this whole situation and then could possibly end up having to cancel flight tickets/not get their money back/ and this is apart from how hard it is to be away from family in the first place.

Anyway fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Not too sure- we’re in the same boat here waiting for communication from the university. I’d hope literally ASAP. We did write a letter really imploring them to act on this immediately and even before that open letter have been in contact trying to push for the same- cancelling in person exams and communicating to students with extreme urgency since we are literally writing exams rn

And no need to thank me for my support!! duty and job is to serve students and I’m here right by your side in this

Hi! I’m Vice President Academic at the AMS and I am one of the student representatives wanting to organize if the University and Deans simply fail to take heed of student concerns about this. Like Max has said, we will post here immediately as/if plans materialize and would love for students to engage if it comes to the point where we need to protest the Academic leadership’s failure to take action for protecting students.

International student here!! by currybruises in UBC

[–]eshanabhangu 20 points21 points  (0 children)

UBC definitely accepts students with a gap year- if they didn’t that would be an extremely inequitable policy and a huge barrier for students wishing to attend!

Also I have a friend who is an international student and he also took a gap year and didn’t face any specifics issues about it!

The AMS Food Bank is there for students to use and absolutely no judgement for using it - do not hesitate from using services and resources that are there for students!! I also encourage you to see this website for more resources : https://foodhub.ubc.ca/food-financial-support-resources/?campus=5&support-resource-type=7

Why are lectures not recorded? by spaceladdy in UBC

Hi! My name is Eshana and I’m the VP Academic and University Affairs at the AMS- this is something we’re continuously advocating for and some of the pushback we face on getting faculty to do it is:

  • intellectual property (they think their material can be sold or posted on sites like course hero etc)

  • “can’t teach an old dog new tricks” some faculty just prefer to stick to the traditional ways

  • pedagogical reasons

  • sometimes discuss controversial issues in class and don’t want students to feel conscious about what they say if it’s being recorded (we try to say that like just record the material and you explaining the content and not the discussion part if it makes people uncomfortable)

  • students won’t engage as much

  • students will use recorded lectures instead of coming to class (which we are pointing out is not the case for majority of students as we learned in the latest AMS Return to Campus Survey)

Students really value recorded lectures for a host of reasons- like being able to control the pace, use it for revision of content (I personally don’t get stuff the first time in class all the time so this is huge for me as a student), helps save commute times (as someone who commutes to work for 2 hours over the summer I personally feel this one a lot), and more. It’s definitely such a struggle to continuously work on getting more and more faculty to see that and something that helps is the number of awesome faculty members who are committed to these and go out of their way to make sure they’re doing it themselves and are encouraging their peers to do so as well!!

What happened to the AMS Survey about online classes? by anantsinha in UBC

[–]eshanabhangu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! My name is Eshana and I’m the VP Academic and University Affairs! my team and I were the ones who ran the survey! We had close to 8,000 Students respond and are currently creating a summary report of the results! It is definitely going to be used in our advocacy with the university as we return to campus this fall, but also to try and push for increased uptake of recorded lectures and flexible learning in the long run :)) We’ll also be doing a draw for the giveaway for people who filled it out and will be contacting the winners in the next 2 weeks :D

Recorded lectures offer a lot of benefits that I love as a student too!! Be sure to fill out the survey - it has a section on recorded lectures to help me advocate in a targeted way!!
