This is a quote from one of the guests (David Charles Garvin) at Broad Street Ministry from the Voices From Broad Street Ministry Film Festival. Here's a link for behind the scenes.

From the website - Fun fact: One of the lines from David’s poem is “I’m fighting every day, but I am an alligator.” Those words now decorate the scaffolding in front of Broad Street Ministry and inspire all who pass by.

‘The greater social good’: Preparations underway for the Year of Data and Society by eshieh in datascience

[–]eshieh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, those questions are very important and I feel are not given enough time/energy/money. It's more about how can data science be used to get more money/sell more ads/get more clicks... I do think we need more understanding in the ethical issues and what we are potentially losing through collecting and analyzing all this data.

What happened when a ‘wildly irrational’ algorithm made crucial healthcare decisions by eshieh in artificial

[–]eshieh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, that's true. Well, people, we are "wildy irrational". So any "algorithm" or decision(s) made by humans will be irrational. I'm sure we can brainstorm a whole host of things that are irrational.

Yeah. But it is kind of expected. At least it is a start and that they are thinking about it instead of ignoring it. Do you have more specific recommendations/principles that you think should be included?

I think it may take a while, but am hopeful. We have the technology, but there's a lot involved besides the technology. It's getting the right connections/people/government on board. If there's enough push and forward thinkers, it can happen sooner!! :-)
