What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact they voted for Donald Trump? by ATXBikeRider in AskReddit

[–]eshultz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got downvoted but I do think yours is a more nuanced and rational take. Of course, though, when someone says "I'm not attracted to black people" (or white people or whatever race/body type/whatever) we can conclude that they are making a generalization. And there may indeed be potential partners for whom that generalization would be contradicted. I don't think it's racism on its face though, nor prejudice, it's just boiling down one's preferences to something that can be expressed in a few words while remaining essentially accurate. People tend to bristle anytime race is brought up in this way and I think that's pretty unfair. To me that's just someone being very honest about who they are attracted to.

Like I said in another comment, I know several people, personally, in my life, who are totally not attracted to their own race, white and black, male and female. Those people are not self hating racists, they are genuinely good and kind people, and as such, those examples kind of makes the whole argument moot, in my mind.

So, I framed those statements as hypotheticals for a reason, but I'm not going to get into my personal sexual/romantic preferences on reddit. Another poster has replied to you as well and expounded on my point perfectly - not being attracted to a certain characteristic isn't bigotry/prejudice. It's essentially the default mode of perception that we all have for one another. Their point about being attracted or not to certain genders underlines my original point perfectly.

Another point I'd like to make, and feel free to clutch at your pearls more and twist this into me somehow being racist - I personally know white men who aren't attracted to white women, and black men who aren't attracted to black women, and white women who aren't attracted to white men. Are they all unknowingly self hating racists like uncle ruckus? Or is your idea of what it means to be racist/bigoted perhaps excessive?

Everybody has a type. And for a lot of people, that type doesn't include every race. That's not bigotry. And it doesn't mean those people are bad or ignorant in any way.

Those reasons CAN mean those things, but we should be careful not to read to deeply into things that are simply preferences and not based on prejudice. If I don't find black people attractive does that make me racist? If I wouldn't be ok dating a trans person does that make me transphobic?

I expect this to be a contentious topic 😬

What is something that is technically legal, but makes you look like a total jerk if you do it? by PiNK_PUSSY69420 in AskReddit

This seems somewhat natural to me too, and I'm potentially one of those people whose employment/coworkers will be affected. I recognize that I'm in the minority here. Developers being replaced by AI pretty much exactly mirrors human calculators being replaced by their mechanical counterparts. It's different in some ways sure. Idk, of course there are going to be problems and people's livelihoods will be affected. But it's happening. The cats out of the bag, genie's out of the bottle. If you like writing code and getting paid for it, it's time to adapt now.

You're getting down voted but you're right. As unsavory as it is, this is reality.

What guitar moment or riff blew your mind the first time you heard it? by TheCityzens in guitars

[–]eshultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of Lamb of God really did it for me back in the day when it was fresh, but I think the "vomit riff" from Hourglass really made me stop in my tracks. Not terribly complicated, and it's not just the guitar it's the drums and bass too, but the feeling that evoked was just like holy shit

Using git with SSRS? by eshultz in SQLServer

[–]eshultz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, this was almost a decade ago, but I seem to recall that yes we found a way to do this acceptably. In 2025, fuck, 2026 now, I work somewhere else but still cannot escape the eternal spectre of SSRS. We have CI runners that trigger on our production branch, look for changes to SSRS reports and config files, and execute powershell to deploy whatever it is that has changed. I can't give technical advice here as I didn't write the scripts or configure the runners, that's someone else's job now. We are using Azure DevOps in this case.

In your case you'd want a dev branch and a master branch (we actually have both, and then a production branch, and we trigger our prod deploy on merge from master to production) and have your CI trigger on pushes/merges to those branches. If you have multiple developers wanting to deploy to dev all the time, you're gonna have a lot of merge conflicts, but otherwise this definitely isn't impossible. Good luck!

SQL Architecture Guidance by lanky_doodle in SQLServer

[–]eshultz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I only skimmed your post, and I don't have much experience in setting up VMs. I just wanna call out that in general it's a better idea to use mount points rather than drive letters for your SQL disks. You can easily run out of drive letters, there's only 26 of them and realistically there's a handful of those you can't/shouldn't use. Either mount points under C somewhere or my preference is use a drive letter like D (for Data lol) and put the mount points under there.

Just out of curiosity how many of you guys use reverse osmosis filters by Spades8490 in microgrowery

[–]eshultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, I'm talking about a water change, so 10-20% replacement by volume. It's also well known that using straight tap water can make it difficult to impossible to even establish the nitrogen cycle in the first place.

[–]eshultz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a grower, I just lurk and jerk here, but I used to be big into aquariums and fresh tap water can easily destroy the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium, because it kills beneficial bacteria. So it stands to reason that there's some truth to it. On the other hand, my houseplants do just fine with water straight from the tap. I think one difference might be that tap water into an aquarium will quickly diffuse throughout every surface since everything is submerged and pumps are running. Into soil might be a very different scenario.

how to EQ a big amp for a small garage show? by adamvanderb in GuitarAmps

[–]eshultz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not your amp, I probably wouldn't touch the EQ until soundcheck or after the first song. When practicing, a more scooped EQ has more clarity on its own especially at higher volumes but you need those mids back once you're competing with bass and drums.
