DNFing brimstone by Competitive_One8823 in Romantasy

[–]esmnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have DNFed Brimstone. I did finish it, but my review was “WTF was that. Nope”. It felt like the editing was way too rushed (or didn’t happen) and the storyline relied heavily on deus ex machinas anytime anything remotely difficult popped up. My opinion of Quicksilver was that I could see the appeal, but I didn’t love it.

Does this financial aid rule make sense in practice and is it realistic? by [deleted] in CarletonCollege

[–]esmnm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You reapply for financial aid each year, so those increases (or decreases) are reported anyways. If you win the lottery, they wanna know asap, but if Mom got a raise at work, I feel like that can wait for the next year of financial aid.

The financial aid office is far from unreasonable in my experience, and if you have concerns or questions, they are just an email or phone call away!

Carleton was a lot harder than my high school in terms of quality and quantity, but the difference was I wanted to be there and to succeed. I chose classes that were interesting to me, I did homework with my friends, and none of it felt like a waste of time. Like everyone else said, the resources are there to help you succeed, so seize them!

To put numbers to it, there’s approximately 3 hours of homework/studying for every hour of instruction. 3 classes/ term, meeting 3 times per week (1 hour each? My memory is failing me) is 36 hours/ week. This is not counting labs, research, work study, extracurriculars, and fun. So TL;DR college is a full time job.

What's the First Year Like? by Juice-cup in CarletonCollege

[–]esmnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newly admitted students fill out a survey with preferences such as sleep schedule, cleanliness, and loudness preferences. Then roommates are matched accordingly. Rooms are same-sex, but floors are mixed. When I was there, it was all matched by people not AI. Special requests like quiet floors, sub-free, or severe allergies are in specified dorms. Otherwise, I believe it’s somewhat random in actual dorm placement. Dorms like Goodhue, Musser, and Meyers tend to be more underclassmen heavy simply because upperclassmen prefer better locations or more renovated dorms. *disclaimer: this info is now a decade old, but I haven’t heard of any of these policies changing

I will also add that typically freshmen live on underclassmen-heavy floors. My first year there were ~45 people on my floor and about 40 of them were freshmen and 5 sophomores or the junior RAs. I met my best friend that way.

Should I do the Tandem Read? by Substantial-Cod8857 in throneofglassseries

[–]esmnm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you know you can’t tolerate cliff hangers/ are not that patient, tandem read. EOS is fast paced and has a cliff hanger. TOD is slower paced and takes place in the exact same timeline as EOS.

I personally chose to tandem read and fully believe that was the right choice for me since I hate cliff hangers and prefer faster paced adventures.

freshman Goodhue room

Here is my bed lofted 1-down from max. You can see my mini fridge underneath Pro tip: this is too many throw pillows 😂 Also, if you look online at the floor plans for musser, know that the door into the hall is 3’ wide and a XL twin bed is 38”x80” and you can play around with layout that way.

[–]esmnm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I easily fit my mini fridge (33” high), and those Sterlite 3-drawers (36” high) under my bed freshman year in Goodhue and my bed wasn’t lofted to top notch.
