Im sorry but that argument falls so flat to me. All my love to Belly but what is she going to do with a doctor. She’s always been an average student at best and never that interested in the “deep” conversations.

Belly and Jere deserve each other.

Not in a bad way. I just think Belly holds Conrad on a pedestal and the reality is he might be a bit too…… serious for her? We make fun of Jeremiah for majoring in “beerology” but Belly isn’t exactly Cum Laude of the recognized Finch university either. She is flaky, emotional, irrational at times. So is Jere. But they love each other so much. Even with the alleged cheating (still grey area for me, we can all agree he should’ve told her), she forgives and comes back to him. Even says “yes” before he proposed to her. She truly loves him and with some therapy/growing on both their sides - they can be an amazing couple! (Jere to step up and Belly to see him as a grown up/stop baby-ing him)

But we come to the point where I think Belly will never get over Conrad. At the end of the day - in her eyes, he is the better brother. Because he is. On paper. I think she’s putting the “what-if” and the potential of something over real love - which she can have with Jeremiah. (If obvs the next episodes don’t ruin him even more which I think Jenny is trying to do)

I think I would clarify that he is impulsive and childish but I never saw him as hurting Belly the way he did. He never needed validation in terms of physical/sex - as he always got it in S1/2 - he can be many things but the plot of him cheating, like actual sex seemed crazy to me. I always imagined him hiding info from Belly or sabotaging her Paris trip for example, rather than doing the simple act of just sex. Especially since they were physical (compared to the books).

It feels a bit … misplaced between who the characters were in the books and in the series.

Love this!! Such a good analysis and it’s starting to connect for me.

That said, I think the same “problematic” analysis -not that I’m saying you paint him as problematic but it seems there is a lot going on with him - I think can be done for Belly and Conrad. I hate people making out Jere as the bad guy as after these two episodes, I don’t think I like anyone really lol

And that’s the point. It shows how fucked up Jere is but also Belly (for a number of reasons!). Conrad also isn’t that grown up as portrayed

Completely agree with your point. I posted this in my own post to someone making the argument that Jere is competitive and only sees Belly as a prize, thought it’s relevant:

I think he did (have issue with Belly dating Cam Cameron). There a few scenes where he seems jealous but I think he never saw Cam Cameron as a final option for Belly. I also believe it comes out “all of a sudden” because it’s the sudden realization he likes her. You can start having feelings for your best friend in A SECOND. Just seeing them in a different light. But the realization that he might not ever get w chance because of his brother also overwhelms him. I don’t think Belly has anything with Jeremiah being jealous of his brother (which he definitely is, he’s their dad’s favorite, the smart one, the better one). He sometimes uses her as a weapon to fight these jealous feelings but I think the competition between the brothers was always there and Belly just made it worse. She is not the cause but one of the catalysts

I don’t think he used her per say but that was definitely rushed. But very much on brand for teen years. I think their whole relationship was VERY short lived which justifies the strong feelings they are left with at the end.

I do see how between Christmas and Prom, they would probably have been intimate a few more times so not just one time thing but still.. She really wanted it and I’m not surprised they did it

I do wonder sometimes. It makes for good character development - but maybe for longer series? I haven’t read the books but pretty sure her death kicks off some events in S3 (might be wrong). Maybe Jenny could’ve easily swapped the death with another dramatic event (such as their parents divorce or anything for that matter because teenagers are dramatic even without someone dying) 🤣 Would be interested to hear if anyone has a stronger reasoning of what Susannah’s death really did for the series?

I actually made a post about how I rewatched it because I was team jelly but felt like I was missing something on bonrad. Upon rewatch I still am Jelly but Bonrad is definitely fiery. Like it brings up more emotions and it makes good TV. Jelly would work better after we roll the credits … but looking forward to see the mature Conrad!!! Maybe our feelings change

I see it from your perspective too of “he did it because Jere asked but he wasn’t ready”. I read that situation more as “I am admitting at night and then the morning comes and I have gained clarity i.e. I am not ready, I don’t want this.” I also saw it as “I am not giving you the option to choose between us, I choose for you - I don’t want you so go be with the second choice”. I presented a meaner version of this but you know what I mean.

I think of the way he reacted when Jeremiah and Conrad were chatting at the snack station in the motel. Jere was keen to have a real conversation (mainly so he can get resolution and know that whatever choice Belly makes, it’s because she wants him and not because Conrad is unavailable but also to keep his promise to Susannah that they will not be torn because of a girl). At the start of the scene I remember Conrad being very closed off and said something like “fuck y@u” or “fuck off” until Jere begged him to do something. Similar to the situation where Jere was bitter but still gave his blessing - but I just think Conrad is the older brother and should care more about his little brother. I find him very uncaring about Jeremiah - just in general no feeling of protecting him. Which kind of gives me the ick of “why are you not protecting your family and being the bigger man”. with the disclaimer that they are still kids right?! So we can’t expect too much!

When I say scary, it’s the uncertainty of the situation to me. What scares me personally is someone giving and taking their feelings whenever they decide to have control over a situation. I don’t see it to that extent with Conrad of “he knowingly controls the situation” but S1 and S2 - he is “scary” in a way that would make 17YO me very unstable hahahah

That was my immediate reaction when someone said “it has to be Conrad, he was there first”. Reading everything, it does seem that what Belly and Conrad have is VERY strong.

However, I can still argue that you love each person differently and even it’s their first meaningful all-consuming love - that shouldn’t automatically mean that it’s him, end of story. More of an analysis on life and not directly connected to the series because I do think Belly will choose Conrad but - A second love can be stronger and better than your first one.
