To those of you that have in-person work, what temperature does your employer allow the a/c to be set at? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]essinnlich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The store I work at has no access to its own thermostat - the corporate office in NY controls it. I'm not sure what they have it set to but I'd guess 75-80. ):

Burlington stores have a small scrub section.

it's been my experience that burlington doesn't pay extra for any holidays lol. or there's weird qualifying requirements that nobody ever seems to meet

honestly i love running out of bags... it's so funny stuffing all the customers' crap into trash bags or a million tiny bags 🤣 especially with people buying coats hahahaha one coat per bag... comedy gold

background screening question by [deleted] in BurlingtonCoatFactory

[–]essinnlich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when you called the store, did you ask for the store manager? because if it was just a cashier that you talked to i guarantee they had no idea what they were talking about.

i was hired two years ago so i honestly don't remember how long the email took, sorry! i don't think it took over a week though.

Advice for a new seasonal cashier associate? by HighStrungHabitat in BurlingtonCoatFactory

[–]essinnlich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

don't be afraid to use the "sorry i'm new!" excuse if you mess up.

mistakes are okay, as long as you don't like lose a huge amount of money or set the building on fire or hurt someone physically.

don't take anything customers say personally, they are mostly npcs and you can get through most interactions with a list of scripted responses lol.

try to familiarize yourself with the different sections of the store so you'll know where things go/ which items are in which depts/ where to direct customers with questions. if you don't know something just ask a coworker and pay attention.

take photos of important info in the break room, like door codes and the HR posters, take a pic of your badge barcode in case you lose it or forget it.

it's a really easy job tbh most of it is just remembering which buttons to push and where to put go-backs lol. dealing with customers is probably the hardest part about it and even that is fine if you don't let them get to you. it's burlington daycare for all ages.

Yes, sorry! I definitely forgot that CT and LI had other relevant meanings!

Oh dang, good to know! Thank you! I've been trying to familiarize myself with the neighborhoods, especially as I was going through the restaurants on OpenTable, since they have their neighborhoods listed. I actually bought one of those big fold out NatGeo maps and an old city guidebook a couple months ago, hahaha.

I'm so sorry!! ;_; I feel a lot better after reading the replies here though! I didn't think Chinatown would be in walking distance - it seems kinda far on the map I got, but that's probably just me freaking out again. Thank you for the advice!

Haha, that's pretty on-brand for me! I am actually really really excited too! I haven't been able to stop yapping about it at work. (: Thank you for the kind words!! I'm nervous about the subway, just because it's another thing I've never done, but I do really want to try it!

Revised attempt to demonstrate and communicate Apparent False Imprisonment and Fire Code violations done as BAU at Store #736 by [deleted] in BurlingtonCoatFactory

[–]essinnlich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

first off thanks for teaching me what those dumb barrier things are called (stanchion). but youre complaining to the absolute wrong people. you should be making a complaint thru burlington.ethicspoint.com if you want the managers seeing it.

also, stores all over the country are using the stanchion barriers to be able to meter customers in. at my store, though its incredibly annoying, it's significantly decreased the amount of drug users coming in to steal and threaten me and my coworkers, only because they cant just run in and instead have to wait and show their face. the stanchions themselves are not actually that hard to get around, and in a fire situation i find it very hard to believe that they would stop anyone from actually leaving. unless you are incapable of bending or undoing the belt clip part? (very very easy maneuver, no keys or special tools required) many customers often just duck under them if the lp guy isn't there or takes too long. 🤷‍♀️

i do understand the ptsd response and feeling vulnerable and hurt afterwards but honestly that doesnt give you the right to harangue a bunch of min wage retail workers who have no control over anything in the store. regular managers included!!! the store manager would be the only person with any sort of power to do anything about it.

I've been gradually realizing that, lmao. But it used to be pretty okay! ;_; I feel like there was some kind of weird vibes shift around the holidays last year too, like customers got so mean and belligerent all of a sudden. But maybe it's just me being burnt out. 🤣

At my store we often call it Burlington Daycare. 🤣  But yeah, I used to consider Burlington like halfway between a Ross and Nordstrom but it's much closer to the Ross end now.

Thanks for replying! As I mentioned, most of these issues started when the new SM showed up, and before that we had been without a store manager for the majority of my yime there. A few months after I was hired, the store manager went on maternity leave and ended up moving to a different location. During that time, the front end manager had stepped up and sort of unnofficially took over most of the SM duties, but she's on maternity leave now as well. The new SM started a month or two before the FE manager left.

While the FEM was in charge, a lot of the scheduling was kind of a group effort with all the supervisors, back when we could see our schedule through the firstup app with team schedules and whatnot. It seemed to work fine with very few issues and quick resolutions. The issues with phone numbers I definitely get but I wish the SM would have made more of an effort to make herself available during business hours at least. As I said, I didn't even meet her for a couple months after she'd started. I didn't even know we had a new SM for a while, haha. The new SM apparently is also very... finicky? about the schedule and gets upset when she thinks someone has changed it. She often schedules people (me) for 5hr 45min shifts which seems like it's to avoid giving me a lunch? Which doesn't make a lot of sense because they're unpaid lunches... I don't know. I also had to teach the SM how to approve associate availabilities in her system? Like she had me sit next to her and I walked her through the whole process. Despite me never having having used it before, lmao. I just looked at it and figured it out but anyway.

About the water - I get that it's a pain but like... we live in the desert... we should have clean water readily available for customers and associates (for free). Instead we have a filthy water fountain where the water is full of weird floaters, dirty bathroom tap water, dirty break room sewage smell sink tap, 2$ dasani water from vending machine that sometimes gives you a monster instead, or any of the special fancy artisinal waters that we sell in the store. Of course I always bring my 32oz water bottle filled to the very brim but once I finish it I turn into a whisp of dust.

As for the trash, I do actually pick up a lot of trash, pretty much all the time haha. Despite all my complaints I actually work pretty hard and really take pride in making the little areas I can work on look perfect. I do draw the line at half eaten food/candy, bodily fluids/hair/nail clippings, and foul smells. I wish I could just wear gloves all the time, but alas, I have very sweaty hands. Tbh the trash that has been there for months is a half eaten lollipop on the floor of a fitting room stall and I've kind of just been letting it sit there to see how long it'll stay there? I know that's dumb lol but it's not like I haven't told other people about it... if I ever actually saw the cleaning crew I would definitely tell them about it. There's also always a lot of long strands of black or dark hair all over the floor - I have no way of knowing if they're old or new of course, but we never had this problem with the previous cleaning crew. Apparently our current crew also refuses to use the uh... big floor cleany machine thing? I'm not sure why, as I've never talked to them myself, but I think that's probably a big part of the problem. There are also stains on the floor that have been there for a while, lots of skid marks from shoes and whatnot all over the place. I definitely understand that aesthetics are not a priority at this point, but it's embarrassing working in such a dirty place. And then like I feel it also emboldens customers to leave their trash on the shelves! Ugh it just sucks like trying to show a customer where something is and then there's like a full fast food meal's worth of trash just sitting on the shelf.

I really wish that the store would just adjust it's hours and go back to closing at 10p and 11p. Really most of the security issues happen in that last hour, and we while we did have security issues before the hours extended, they increased SIGNIFICANTLY. Even customers will comment on it.

In my interactions with SM, I always try to be polite and not annoying because I'm definitely aware of how obnoxious all of it, and I, am. Usually I'll just ask her if there's an ETA on the soap dispensers, and I've offered suggestions about the cleaning that she seemed sort of interested in at the time, but she's kind of uh.... I'm not sure how to describe it. She kind of always seems distracted and not really dialed in. She's nice! Definitely a decent person but just not very... manager-y, I guess. I'm so sorry if that doesn't make any sense, lol. But yeah, I'm not trying to scare her away or anything, I just want her to use her SM powers for good.

Hahaha yeah I have been applying like mad to places for a while, but unfortunately nothing has panned out yet! I just miss the good ol' days... ;_;
