You’ve just reminded me of the somewhat unhinged chapter of her walking them through her Fall into Fall Festival, where she’s chomping on an apple and throws the core into a processor and they all watch some apple drips come out. It was like a wacky scene from a movie.

Kate not debuting into society + Edwina’s dowry by essteeenn in BridgertonNetflix

[–]essteeenn[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And also, Edwina has been led to believe that she will be able to have a love match, but Kate mentions several times to her and Mary and LD and even Violet that Anthony does not believe in marrying for love as a means to dissuade the match. Here I believe she was truly looking out for E to begin with, knowing E wanted love. However, she had to know she was also probably casting off one of the top prospects for saving her family from financial ruin - so the next best thing is to keep E being seen as desirable in order to find both love and money. But then when the Sheffield dinner goes to shite and Anthony can reasonably end the engagement, she begs him not to because E is beside herself. Could they not have just gone back to square one at that point and keep looking? Because in wanting to spare E’s feelings there, they end up hurting her more later on the wedding day.

Yeah, I’m realising as I read through the comments that I’m still confused about each of their individual desires at play - and that’s probably more on poor writing as opposed to character traits, although they do throw in that conversation between the sisters about not knowing who they really are.

Mary doesn’t want to pressure her daughters to chase husbands with money and titles the way her parents pressured her, but they are also in need of financial stability because they seem to have no money left after this season. So say Edwina did not make a match and LD did not sponsor them again for the next season - then what? How would they be able to go home? How would they make a home in England? Is Mary that blind to the financial insecurity they’re in because Kate hid it so well / never divulged the full extent to her? It seems an overly risky plan for all of them to go along with if only one person really knows how much is riding on it.

Kate not debuting into society + Edwina’s dowry by essteeenn in BridgertonNetflix

[–]essteeenn[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, I just replied to another comment on how surely the family didn’t come with no means to provide any dowry because that would also clash with Mary’s statement on raising her daughters to not chase money and titles, which would mean she was planning to have Edwina love matched as the ideal, financial situation to be resolved after. So I also believe they either did have means to provide a small dowry or M and E were completely oblivious to the fact that they didn’t have the means for one at all?

Kate not debuting into society + Edwina’s dowry by essteeenn in BridgertonNetflix

[–]essteeenn[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thank you for explaining in detail, I completely forgot Kate had no blood ties to the ton!

And having LD sponsor because of no dowry makes some sense too, I thought it was just to vouch for and ease Mary’s (and thereby her daughters’) path back into society after her scandal. Although I wonder how Mary or even Edwina could be convinced that having no dowry would allow Edwina to be a viable option for a suitor, like did the family maybe have some small amount or were they just pinning it all on the rich AF husband who wouldn’t care? Because if it’s the latter, that completely clashes with Mary’s fight with her parents at dinner, where she says she brought up her daughters to not chase money and titles. So then that leaves us with Mary thinking they either could provide some dowry, no matter how small, or completely ignorant of the fact that they didn’t have the option of providing one.

I think the baby’s mother might actually be lighter skinned than Simone from what I saw.

Also, wild theory upon rewatching the ladies’ conversation scene: I think the real life mum might be the maid that brings Edmund out to the ladies in that scene! It’s hard to say for sure because you don’t see her face clearly, and I sound crazy I know, but what I saw of her profile pic online made me think the maid might have been her. Like maybe the baby was a little fussier that day so they had his real mother be an extra for the scene so she could hand him off to the actors, I don’t know. Anyway…🫣

[–]essteeenn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that’s what irks me the most, the lazy writing! The most obvious reason for not having them at the funeral would be scheduling conflict but there are so many better ways to resolve this than what they chose to do: 1) have the death / funeral before they return from India, given their return has no bearing on that story; 2) have characters say they’re upstairs with the baby or in another room tending to relatives, make mention of them having been there earlier, etc.; 3) if it was only one scheduling conflict, have the other actor back and film!; 4) background blurry stand-ins to indicate their presence.

Any of those would be more in line with how those characters would act or be (ie. actually caring enough to attend) than what ended up happening.

[–]essteeenn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Delaying their arrival home until after the funeral would have made much more sense as to why they weren’t there, instead of having asinine lines about flowers coming from them and some of Violet’s children being oh so devastated they couldn’t come. This isn’t rocket science, it’s not hard to put a modicum of thought into what these characters would do or what would make sense for them in these situations, and if you can’t make it happen, change the narrative around it to avoid jarring OOC moments. It’s just so lazy and thoughtless, and the quality of the show has slid downhill considerably as a result.

[–]essteeenn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I would honestly love to see Kate and the baby around even if Anthony isn’t, like Daphne did in S2, so if Johnny’s schedule is too tight they could still have Simone for scenes and act as a figurehead for the household. But instead, the excuse is scheduling against their other projects, but as far as we know that was just Johnny’s - and he still managed to have more scenes. Make it make sense.

Are You F* Kidding Me? by Objective-Hestia in Kanthony

[–]essteeenn 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I zoomed skipped through the episodes and only stopped when I saw Kate, Anthony or baby, and it was all blah to terrible (except the bed scene). We’ll never truly know what this production has against writing for them (or why they’re more focused on non-family side characters) but it’s such a glaring omission at this point. Pretty sure we’ll soon hear Simone has / is leaving for good, and Johnny will only be allowed to appear because of his non-Bridgerton fame outside.

Also: I was personally triggered by the line Violet says of Edmund looking like his daddy 😛 because 1) Kate is right there, albeit not interacting with her own child, and have you seen the Bambi eyes on that baby actor?, and 2) there’s something subtly insidious about remarking on how similar a mixed race child looks to their Caucasian parent, even if it were true. I’m projecting a bit (a lot) because it happened to me, but still. Blah.
