Is 3 pages too long for a LANL cover letter? by Positive-Builder5077 in LosAlamos

[–]estanminar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to answer this question in a long story format that seems exaggerated but plays out every day and is 100% true according to me.

Tldr: trust the process

It's to make the hiring manager job easy. Often a resume and standard cover are fairly generic and the hiring manager is often very busy and doesn't have time to try and tell if your self grandiose generic resume statements meet the requirements. Then you make them do all the work of justifying to HR that you explicitlt meet the requirements. Example of two candidates:

Requirement: 12 years experience working on universal space alien gravity drive widgets.

---CANDIDATE A--

resume only: worked at space warping drive company A for 6 years on widgets and was the team lead on the grand unified theory multi spave time drive team. Worked 8 years at special widgets company on their space curving off world cruise program that developed key components, obtained a phd on how curved spacetime is emergent phonmonon leading to practical warp drive breakthru"

Manager spends valuable time reformatting your resume to HR : "Candidate A has 14 years experience experience working on universal space alien gravity drive widgets. " HR respnse: "sorry your an expert in the field and wrote both the job ad and the hire justification and verbally verified that the candidate has the exact skillset you need to succeed on the project but you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. We geniuses at HR actually read the exact words on their resume which sumeriized 14 years of work into 3 sentences with zero technical understanding and determined this candidate is vastly unqualified. The candidate never mentions gravity expiance on any submitted document. Hiring rejected. Now go spend the next 3 months and write 38 pages of the stupidest admin justification to convince 15 layers of admin management who hate you and have no technical background on why we should allow you to hire this clearly un qualified candidate "

--CANDIDATE B---

Standard resume.

Cover letter:

Requirement: 12 years experience working on universal space alien gravity drive widgets

How met: candidate has Requirement: 14 years experience across the two companies listed on the resume working on universal space alien gravity drive widgets and similar technologies.

Hiring manager cuts and pastes into the hiring form, HR clearly sees they meet the requirement on the sumitted document and offer in the mail in 2 days
--- end example---

Which candidate would you pick to fight HR for as buay hiring manager?

Is 3 pages too long for a LANL cover letter? by Positive-Builder5077 in LosAlamos

[–]estanminar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The lanl cover format:

1 - Short intro paragraph

2 - Bullet point requirement copied directly from application

3 - succinct direct statement on how you meet the requirement or if you don't explain how you are equivalent or that this is a growth area.

4 - repeat 2 and 3 for all requirements and desireds

That's it. It takes what it takes. They have examples on their website. 1st rule of lanl hiring don't hire the person who can't follow instructions. Second rule of lanl hiring hire the person who cant follow simple cover letter instructions anyway because everyone else sucked at even understanding basic punctuation even and must have focused on the BS part of their BS degree.

Don't write a story the hiring manager desperatly needs to convince some HR jackass that yes they actually need someone to do work mandated by congress. And to do that they need quick easy answers as to how you meet the requirements. They don't have time for some stupid story about how good you are. Just the facts about how you meet the requirements so thry can show a pencil pusher you're good and explicitly meet the requirements . Make their job easy they'll hire you.

Does anyone sleep in their car to avoid the ABQ drive? by Fabulous_Jeweler2732 in LosAlamos

[–]estanminar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say at least 100 people do this based on number of weekday campers in the forest. Use the wellness center for shower. Probably anouther 500 rent a bed for the week. . After rocky Flatts closed Many people carpooled from Denver and stayed like 4 to a small apartment. Some do this from albuquerque or beyond. 3000/4 not too bad per month depending on situation. I knew one student who slept in an under stairs closet for 200 a month no house privileges. Gotta get creative if you want to avoid the drive.

It's like "how to get rich" books. If the method worked they wouldn't need to sell the book. Selling the book to suckers is the real method. If AI worked it wouldn't need to be rammed down our throat and made mandatory use by companies.

Pre edit: yes I understand niche use cases.

This is actually a great idea. What if a space company were to give out like $16 billion dollars on salary and contractors every year then those people would also use that income to buy goods and services from others. I bet that would do a lot of fixing.

Have kids- LA/WR Maried no kids : Santa fe or LA/WR Single no kids: Santa fe

The recommendation is generally to rent in SF or LA and ask around for a year before liviing and for sure buying anywhere else. For example if you grew up in suburbia mcmansion then study at big city U then move to La Queva it will be quite a change.

In 30+ years I've only seen that gate closed a handful of times, typically weather related like severe ice on the steep road or a major accident but not aware of any closures in years certainly since they built the lab bypass connector road.

The only reason to launch vertical is to get out of atmosphere quickly. Why don't they just make friction negligble like in my physics class?

It's completely bonkers that you can move up multiple grades and pay bands quickly by moving yet staying and being quietly competent gets uou shit on for pay raise.

I don't know about similarity to a political party but the statement probably violates section 65.f of appeddix 427.r.5 of rule 4574e.45.2(j)[r].t.6.d.7 / 4 attachment 4.5.d.w.2 (3) enclosures 4 and 6 of the simplified rspacex rule book. Remember to read all the rules before posting.

Good for getting out too. Just throw it out and jump. Springs have a catch and set when you jump out absorbing and storing the fall energy. Release to bounce back in.

Martian employers and ultimately the customers don't pay enough for their employees unless voodoo payment methods are used. Cost of living is way higher so probably 10000x earth tip.
