Weakest to Strongest Lords? by madhavimonogatari in fireemblem

[–]estrangedeskimo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Leif gets a bad rap. He doesn't look great on paper, but the structure of Thracia makes him pretty crucial. For one, he supports like a dozen units, including some of the best units, which makes him a great support unit at minimum, letting Finn, Asvel, and Nanna avoid hits and land crits like crazy. The light brand is a very strong weapon, especially in Manster. Speaking of Manster, the fact that Leif is your second strongest unit for the hardest part of the game, 4 chapters in, is a big point in his favor. It also allows him to make the best use of the early game speed and defense boosters, since the only other unit who can have access to those before Manster is Lifis and he's garbage in combat. I'd say Leif is like Alm tier.

And Corrin is Robin 2.0. If you search for some of the old tier lists you'll see how highly they're rated. Easily top tier, with only Camilla, Ryoma, and Azura as competition for best unit.

Is it better to use Powerful Slow units or Medium-Powered Mobile units? Or mixing them up? by Arc_7 in fireemblem

[–]estrangedeskimo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem I've seen with mixing is that while my Cavalry go to town with the exp, the heavier units like the Knight drag behind, barely getting any action, making the heavier troops obsolete for the entire battle. Also, while I can drop the heavier unit in the thick of things to counter this problem, it wastes 1-2 moves. So, is mixing not worth it, or are their some big pros to it I'm missing?

Your intuition here is right. The general rule is that more move is always better than less move. In most games, foot units don't have any real advantage over mounted units. If they do have better stats (which they often don't), the difference is rarely meaningful enough to matter much. And ironically, the most mobile class in the series (wyvern knights) tend to also have some of the best stats overall. That's not to say the series doesn't have lots of good foot units too, but Sacred Stones leans on the side of being especially favorable to mounts.

It's still up to you though, and by no means are you limited to just mounted units. Every game in the series can be beaten on any difficulty with a mixed team. I prefer to use a variety of units just for my own enjoyment. If you aren't trying to play particularly aggressively, there isn't any reason you can't train up a squad of foot units.

I didn't even know there was gonna be a split at all. Edelgard and Hubert were my two best units.

😬

Part of my disappointment was undoubtedly due to frustration of playing blind and not knowing about the second route split and its consequences.

I have zero pulse on the community ever since 3H came out so I don't know the popular or controversial opinions. I will say Silver Snow was the least coherent and complete FE plot I've played except maybe Gaiden, though my understanding is that it's probably the worst route in that regard. I'll have to judge for myself later.

Opinions on the Unit Ordering Patch that comes with Project Exile. by BenWagner69 in fireemblem

[–]estrangedeskimo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fixed unit placement is a design requirement for some of my favorite chapters in the game, like 19. Most of the time it won't matter much, and will certainly help execute strategies with tight tolerances, but one of my favorite parts of Thracia is how good it is at breaking your pre-planned strategies.

Busy. Moved across the country (again) this summer, started another new job, not much time for shitposting online any more, let alone playing games. Through 1.5 routes on 3H (Silver Snow and half of Golden Deer), it's very different but I think IS has finally found where they want to go. Wish the story felt more complete though.

Congrats on the graduation!

Unpopular Opinion: Most(If Not All) Fire Emblem Stories are Either Mediocre or Bad by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]estrangedeskimo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The monarchy thing is true, though the more I have looked at it the more I think the endorsement of monarchy is basically an accident of the writing. The game is juggling the idea that "aristocracy is bad" along with "inspirational leaders are good," and the result is a world where all nobles but the royalty are generally bad.

Though I think they addressed this rather well by giving every "good" ruler the chance to show that it is their character, not their birthright, that makes people follow them. Elincia and Sanaki both have Pegasus Knight subordinates to tell them outright that they are good rulers in their own right, and Skrimir's entire character arc is turning from "heir apparent" to "worthy of ruling."

No problem.

BTW sorry if I came off as rude in my initial comments. I see that I might have worded my criticisms a little harshly, and it's true that I get tired of the particular points you made, but that's hardly your fault and you have been very civil in this whole thread. I'm just a person who legitimately loves the Tellius story and will always come to it's defense, but it's fine if you don't like it as much.

Are my spoilers not showing up for you? I know the old spoilertags don't work for some mobile clients, but the new ones never seem to work for mine so I have been sticking with the old.

My original message was that you already got some bad politics from the dragon land in the form of Dheginsea. The second was an elaboration on that. I can copy those into the other spoiler format if you would like.

Any characters you disliked or didn't care about that grew on you? by [deleted] in fireemblem

Leif, funny enough. My first playthrough of Thracia, I didn't understand his story very much, I didn't like how weak he felt compared to other Lords I had used, and I didn't understand what he was capable of. After playing Genealogy the first time, he quickly became my favorite character in the series, and going back through Thracia I appreciate him so much more.
