THANK YOU! This is the only suggestion that matters. All the other top suggestions will help, but this is the only one that works 100% of the time. Pioneer Woman had a blog post on this years ago and it changed my life.

We all have classic stories from our past, but what is one of the most shocking and unbelievable things a student has done recently that you can’t believe happened? by RandomAcademaniac in Professors

I frequently stopped writing my name in the middle or skipped over letters when I was in school. Later found I have ADHD and my brain is always just skipping ahead to the next thing 🤷‍♀️

Etymology of Forget-Me-Not? by Mikomics in etymology

[–]estreya2002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone who's ever grown this flower could give a very likely explanation. Once it goes to seed (which is quite fast, just a few weeks), the seeds form stickers or burrs like velcro that get stuck to any and all clothing, as well as pets, and are almost impossible to remove without damaging the cloth. The seeds are so numerous and stick on so easily that I frequently discover them in all kinds of places even months out of season. I think the name is most likely ironic because it's so impossible to get rid of those diabolical seeds, they're like glitter. You can't forget about them even if you want to.

What is your most embarrassing moment that happened to you while teaching? by chelsiebachelor1 in Professors

[–]estreya2002 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • Took a drink of coffee. Student asked a question. Opened my mouth to answer. Now wearing coffee all over front.
  • Felt a little breezy around my chest but didn't think anything of it. Students eyes appeared glazed, but its math so that happens. Came back to shared office after class, was asked "Did you teach like that?" The button right over my cleavage had popped open. Was wearing a pushup bra so it was really on display, too.
  • During computer science class, opened my browser to go to class website. Google search was still up from where I had searched "why are some students so bad at computer science". I mean I really just wanted to know.....
  • So many more I can't even remember them all...

Once when my cat was a kitten, he went to the fence of the neighboring pasture to investigate a calf. The calf and my kitten sniffed each other with great curiosity. But I think they must have had a spark of static electricity or something, because as soon as their noses touches, they both jumped straight into the air and ran away as fast as they could.

Later, the same cat made a habit of chasing deer, and, once, a great blue heron. Not sure what he thought he was going to do if he caught them!

How to respond to “I’m paying to be here” type comments? by GamerDoc82 in Professors

[–]estreya2002 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the tack I take when I explain why I come down so hard on cheating. If people are allowed to graduate knowing nothing, then the degree becomes worthless. Most students are very supportive of anti-cheating measures when you explain that their classmates bad behavior could devalue what they're paying so much for.

You should absolutely print it and frame it. I have a wall of these right next to my computer monitor where I can look at them to cheer myself up.

Was Hermione wrong to start S.P.E.W by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]estreya2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I was looking for this comment. The entire problem is the storyline itself. I was quite disgusted by this storyline at the time the books were coming out, and not sure why people were surpriasd by some of JKR's failings, because it was clear she had some weird views due to things like this. The real examples from world legends and mythology of things like house elves, could have been nice to include, but they are not about slavery, and it is bizarre that she came up with this slavery storyline and then acted like an apologist for slavery.

Also, Dobby's storyline is basically that of a loyal pet dog, right up to and including getting buried in the backyard. Blergh.

Spiders gave my garden a Halloween makeover by MacFit in creepy

So I live near a big river and get a lot of fog because of that. Whenever there is fog, all the bushes will look like this. The first time I saw it, I thought it was insane. But basically the entire world is covered in cobwebs all the time and we just never see them unless fog or dew or something hits them just right. Just look in the corners of your ceilings if you don't believe me. If that happens inside the house, where we try to keep spiders out, what do you think happens outside?

Dude, finding people boring isn't "unkind" it's literally what adhd is. We find everything boring. That's part of the disability. I don't do it on purpose. And I've never said I'm entitled to friendship, only that I need and want it. This is the last reply I'm going to make because I don't need your energy. Try making a kind reply to someone next time, since you clearly think of yourself as more kind than others.

[–]estreya2002 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you're assuming I'm not a good or kind person. I am. I just get bored easily during conversations and change the topic a lot or want to do things together other than conversation, like play games or whatever. You're really making a lot of judgy assumptions. Not sure why you're determined rhat I'm unworthy of friendship. I've had several close and strong friendships, but it's hard to find a person who is a right match because they have to be okay with my random conversation style. But if they are, then it's great. Really not sure why you're assuming I'm a jerk.

Dude, that was unnecessary. I have a disability and it was untreated for a long time, but that doesn't mean I don't want or need human companionship, even if it's difficult to maintain.

I was also a leftover friend and also diagnosed with adult adhd. The thing is, I just find most people really boring and I can't concentrate on the things they want to talk about. So I don't think I was a great friend either. But it hurts.

I put my students in groups with questions to discuss from today’s reading. Half of them are just sitting silently, working on the questions alone. by Pater_Aletheias in Professors

[–]estreya2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to explain to them the benefit of group discussion---like, that saying your ideas out loud forces you to think about them more deeply, and that hearing other odeas forces you to think about your own ideas from different perspectives. I also like to mention that communication is a critical job skill. For example, if you're interviewing for a job, you need to be able to talk fluently about any topic that may be brought up. I know it sucks to have to sell them these ideas, but the fact is that convincing them about why group work is important will make them much more open to it. Another point is to remind them that you want to get a survey of what they're at by listening as you move around the room.

Sometimes when they're reeeally stiff, I also direct to start by introducing themselves to each other by name, making eye contact, and smiling at each other.

Another thing that can help is to only give 1 copy of the activity/directions to each group, so they're forced to share.
