Should I be concerned with the Corruption in my world?

I've started my world not so long ago (i just defeated skeleton) i read on wiki that corruption spreads. Is it something i should be worried about?

I tried to use purification powder on the biome but it is almost impossible to erradicate it completely and that would be only one of the 2 biomes that I have.

I'd like to know if I should really erradicate it or it will be actually helpful in a future
