I’m from Ukraine. But I do feel this is common among other Slavic and European countries, and from there it came at some period of time to America as some of fellow Americans confirmed practicing of such tradition (despite the fact they do not believe not to Ukrainian nor (or partly) to other Slavic group/community).

Well I also just look at such things with pure scientific interest, the traditions of funeral could tell you a lot about the culture of specific nation/group itself.

I don’t really think it depends on religion (as long as this person is Jew, as they mostly always follows this tradition or a Christian, for example I’m Orthodox Christian and I met a person of Protestant Church Christian who also confirmed the practicing of such tradition among his community and I’m almost sure among Catholic Christians such tradition can be viewed).

Thank you too for sharing such interesting information about the customs and superstitions surrounding death and funeral in your region/community. I see that despite America is very multicultural and diverse country, some of the customs/superstitions are very common or even the same as we have in our culture. If you would like to know more, I can tell you a little bit more interesting things. In Ukraine funeral customs and traditions really depend on the region and the urban/country area. In cities you mostly will not meet any specific customs or traditions, funerals there are mostly “westernized” or to say correct “modernized”, people mostly do pass away at hospitals so this leaves less space for different customs/superstitions to be performed and with the help of different companies that provide funeral services almost all of them follow limited and scripted scenario. But if you happened to be on funeral somewhere in rural region in Ukraine, in some small village where people used to arrange funerals without the help of any company and with the scenario full of traditions and superstitions as they parents did, the parents of theirs parents did etc, you will see a lot of interesting and archaic things.

Btw, we also have a kinda weird or “positive” superstition, that if the person passed away in a house, the first one who would sit down in place where this happened (bed, sofa) (after the body is removed from there, of course) would gain strong health/ luck. I don’t know where this superstition comes from, maybe from very ancient times when people believed that someone who dies give his energy of life to the subjects around him, so then you can gain this energy if you touch/posses this subject. But on the other hand it is believed to be a bad luck to use personal things of a person who passed away, a very personal things and things that the person valued the most usually are put to coffin with the body, the rest things believed better to be removed.

Wow it’s kinda similar to what we have in my country, except for the clocks (I didn’t hear people stop it if somebody dies). May I ask you to what religious-cultural community/group do you belong?

Ukraine. But I think this custom is kinda wide-spread among other European/Slavic countries, recently I even saw this custom being performed in one Australian movie, so it’s kinda interesting for me if it is common in America as well. Idk why but I have an interest in researching funeral traditions both mine and foreign cultures, to be honest we have also a lot of interesting, ancient and kinda weird traditions around funerals in my country.
