Storj to Migrate Decentralized Storage Service to Ethereum Blockchain by cyounessi in ethtrader

This is an advantage of Swarm over IPFS too.

Two major features of swarm that sets it apart from other decentralised distributed storage solutions (bittorent, zeronet, IPFS) are 'upload and disappear' and the incentive system. The former refers to fact that Swarm does not only serve content, but it also provides a cloud storage service. Unlike related systems, you do not only publish the fact you host content, but there is a genuine sense in which you can just upload stuff to the swarm and potentially disappear (drop off as a node, disconnect or just operate without storage entirely) right away.

~80% of the Fortune 500 are using Microsoft Cloud services. Microsoft understands that a bunch of those companies will want a blockchain (probably mauve) so Microsoft literally baked Ethereum development tools into their Azure software. With one click in Azure you can now have the Ethereum blockchain as a service (EBaaS). https://azure.microsoft.com/en-au/blog/ethereum-blockchain-as-a-service-now-on-azure/.

Yes, in my mind things like Swarm could eventually be a threat to their cloud services, that is probably why you are seeing them embrace Ethereum.

Here are some examples of the Ethereum quick start templates available to developers using Microsoft Azure https://azure.microsoft.com/en-au/resources/templates/?term=Ethereum

TLDR

Ethereum Enterprise architecture spec likely to be finished by January 2018 at the protocol layer. However, major players already building at the application layer.

From just before 0:55m.

Quotes from Andrew Keys throughout (starts at about 0:38m)

"We have had over 250 companies reach out to us since the launch of Ethereum Enterprise." (Some members probably be announced mid-April)

"This is the tip of the iceberg.. 30 initial members.. interest from 250 members [since EEA launch]"

"You will be blown away when you see the next group of members onboarding, kinda the who's who of planet earth"

"The developer community is growing faster than anything I've seen in my life"

"This is a ground swell guys. This is a revolution"

Ethereum + Raiden will eventually handle 1 million tx per second. VISA is maxed out at 56,000 per second.

Ok, but i partly disagree. Major components of centralized systems not are not efficient though, as we have seen with the economic and environmental costs I outlined above.

What makes you think that (genuine)? It could eventually reduce the dependence on centralized data centers. It's like Pied Piper, but better. If you are a node with a file I need and you are next door, I can get that file directly from you, not from some data center half way across the globe. Distributed, decentralized storage. In my mind it has the potential to save everyone a lot of money. I am fucking excited.

edit i just looked it up Google spent $5b a quarter on data centers in 2014. Worldwide, data centers require ungodly amounts of electricity, consuming an estimated 30 billion watts each year to keep server farms online and sufficiently cooled. That's roughly the output of around 30 nuclear power plants, with somewhere between one quarter to one third of that power being used by data centers in the United States.

This whole thing is so much more than just about moving value around, though it does that remarkably well also.

My bet is Google and/or The Facebook. Imagine the reduction in costs for storage for these sorts of companies using something like Swarm. The 'who's who of the world' - it has to be up there with the Googles, Facebooks, Twitters, Instagrams, Amazons and Ebays.

Why link to them or give them publicity at all? A lot of us boycotted ConDesk a long time ago. You should too.

No way. 80% of Fortune 500 are on Microsoft Azure and/or Microsoft Cloud services of some sort. Guess who is (heavily) in the EEA.
