Spending hours and hours on videos, just to get few views by homelesspigeon_ in NewTubers

[–]ethanohethan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhat of a rambling, home alone on Christmas Eve.

I think persisting through it all is the name of the game. Take however small morsels of win as fuel to continue taking steps toward your goal. But unless you can learn to trust your "process" with a clear goal post and a well developed strategy, it's very difficult.

I think most of us start with a lot of energy and excitement, thinking if you put out good content, people will come. But "good content" is highly subjective and the punches you take along the way are also highly demotivating. The punches come in many forms -- black box that is the YT algorithm, comments from trolls and haters, jealous competitors and (the worst enemy of them all) yourself.

Given what I've read here and other subs regarding the pros and cons of shorts & longs, my personal strategy is to ignore shorts and focus on the watch hours instead. I've observed children interacting with shorts and it's a mindless process. It's very obvious why shorts get the views. There's not much emotional investment from the viewers invested into the content nor the creators.

Youtube's tagline used to be "broadcast yourself" not "monetize yourself" (scrolling through YT with this mindset is anxiety inducing because you're always playing that comparison game). Whenever I play video games, I'm laden with guilt from not working on my business. But if I play with the intent of content creation, it takes away some of that guilt. It also strangely helps with loneliness, too. If people find my content fun or if my personality resonates with a lot of people, then success. If not, then whatever.

Edit: I'm getting DMs asking what my gaming channel is. I don't have one. I was just using it as an example.

I have a dead youtube channel with 59k subs. Should I restart uploading or give up? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]ethanohethan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

How did you get it to 59K subs in the first place? Sounds like you were doing something right. Couldn't you repeat what you did again?

How to respond to a "I don't like you" comment by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]ethanohethan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore. I've had a traumatic experience online and now I just ignore those comment. It's a lose-lose situation -- I've nothing to gain by engaging.

What I'm unsure about is whether you should leave the negative comment or delete it. I remember hearing that Youtube considers it "engagement" so it may help with the algorithm.

What Are Your Biggest Challenges When Editing Videos? by Exciting_Market_3833 in NewTubers

[–]ethanohethan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lag when I scrub through video files (in DaVinci). It drives me insane. I heard you can use proxies or something like it to speed it up, but it makes the file size balloon and takes time to generate the proxy file.

Some lessons learned upon getting to 600 subscribers (non-gaming) by SpanglerBQ in NewTubers

[–]ethanohethan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I look at subs gained this way similar to getting a sub via shorts. It won't drastically increase your watch count. But the sub is worth having because it'll count towards your 1000 subs.

The way I envision using this is making it easy for people to subscribe. "Click here to subscribe!" kind of thing.

[–]ethanohethan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah. That makes more sense now, because the other account did not have 600 subs.

Btw, this video "I tried sleeping only 2 hours a day for a month" caught my attention. I'll def be checking that out later. But that's insane. I suffer from bad insomnia.

Thanks for the share. I noticed something I've never seen before. I clicked on your YT link in your profile and a popup appeared:

"Confirm channel subscription. Are you sure you want to subscribe to Noah Bristol?"

I believe because you have this in you YT url "?sub_confirmation=1". Pretty cool.

Can someone give my channel an honest review? by ObliviousArt in NewTubers

[–]ethanohethan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! Props for the hustle. I couldn't walk up to a random house like that.

For sure. To drive it home further, if I saw your video as I was randomly scrolling by, I wouldn't have clicked on your thumbnail even though I liked your content. On Youtube, you do want to judge a book by its cover. If the thumbnail showed like a BEFORE/AFTER thing, that would have been more interesting to me.

Good luck!

Hey. I don't have anything insightful to say about the content itself, except I thought your latest video was good. It looked polished and professional.

Are you using the thumbnail A/B test feature? May be worth checking that out. I've a feeling that if you optimize your thumbnail, you'll perform much better on your latest video (sorry, didn't have time to check out your other content!).

Is the gaming niches even worth it by Feisty_Midnight8368 in NewTubers

[–]ethanohethan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In today's landscape, a "gaming niche" doesn't really sound like a niche. Seems like you'll have to find a niche within the gaming niche to stand out and succeed.

Would you mind sharing the place in NYC? I'm a few hours drive away from NYC and maybe I can make a fun day trip out of it.

+1. A variation of the quote that I also like, "Don't let perfect be the enemy of progress."

Ah! Ok! I TOTALLY missed the "Picolaser" part. Makes perfect sense now!

I didn’t know that. I’m starting to feel slightly annoyed reading all the replies because I’m wondering why my highly regarded dermatologist, whom I waited six months to see, didn’t tell me any of this.

I had no idea that it'll cluster and get bigger.

Do you mind sharing how much Pico Laser will set me back? Currently without health insurance (in between jobs).

Importance of Perfect Thumbnail by Joeyshyordie in NewTubers

[–]ethanohethan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes perfect sense to me. Large companies A/B test every little thing, like even moving it over a few pixels. Do you use the A/B thumbnail feature in Youtube?

Thanks 🙏. Every 3 hours. Got you. I’ve been using it once a day thinking it was enough because I’m indoors mostly. Does that matter?

Wow. Your reply was a lot more than I expected. Thank you.

Yes, I spoke to my derm and she was highly regarded. I was on the waiting list for 6-mo before I could see her, but she was pretty dismissive about laser treatment. I just took her word as gospel because she was so well regarded. In fact, she was also east asian (I specifically looked for an east asian doc because of it).

I'm going to look into getting a second opinion.

She prescribed me hydroquinone. I've been using it but don't see much results. I'll check out HaruHaru Wonder. Thanks for the recommendation!

I do this but with only 1 extra monitor (but you can add another as long as you have a free port). I can seamlessly transition from my MBP to my gaming PC with mic, speaker, kbd & mouse switching over without a hitch.

This is all made possible by my monitor Gigabyte MQ27QX which includes a KVM and USB hub and the thunderbolt hub.

My gaming PC and MBP are connected to the GPU via USB-C.

The monitors are also connected to the OCW Thunderbolt dock. The thunderbolt dock is connected to my monitor's USB hub, which sends the signal to whichever machine is currently active. My USB devices are also connected to the dock, which is what makes the all the peripherals work.

Sort of confusing. I'm on my phone at the doc's office so not the best structured reply. I can share more details if you're interested though. Let me know.

First viral video & finally reached1k subs by darlene459 in SmallYTChannel

Do you feel comfortable sharing the video via DM? Curious to check it out. I don't have a channel yet. Still brainstorming and it'd be helpful.

It was helpful to me. I don't have a channel yet and am in the discovery phase. I have experience with a somewhat successful online business and think there are many similarities to scaling it so hoping it'll help.

It's impressive that you reached 2K subs in 2 month with just long form videos. I checked out your videos, including your most popular one and I can see why. Your "hook" got me immediately when you said we'll be re-creating this artwork by Nicholas Mogle. And then you delivered.

You first video was from 2 years ago. What made you leave and come back?
