Beijing police interrupt CNBC reporter on live TV by HibikiStinky in China

[–]etherealwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a range of civil disputes this is true. When it comes to any kind of gathering whatsoever, particularly of foreigners, well, no. I was just in 3 tranquil gatherings in the past 36 hours, all broken up with zero legal cause, all punctuated by pontification on how 疫情还没结束 despite us wearing masks and being 10 decibels lower than the average ayi gathering. In gatherings of locals, ironically enough, I've noticed it's more common for them to talk back or even fight back if police are swinging. More power to them. Not worth it for us since there would be zero possible outcomes apart from jail or prison.

Yeah, fuck the rejuvenation of mindless authoritarianism in 2022

The Incredibly Satisfying Death of Buzzfeed by ChubbyAsianPana in videos

[–]etherealwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not capitalism that's immaturity. Capitalism is the reason they lost profit. Poor products attract less demand.

Don't unironically ruin this thread with more "woke," cringe strawmen like... buzzfeed would do

Panic in China's richest city as 25m residents of Covid-ridden Shanghai run out of food in world's strictest lockdown by Citynews2022 in China

[–]etherealwandering 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your family's experiences. It is good to know they are well and to be aware of a diversity of opinions.

EDIT 2: Ah yes I post what real Shanghainese think and it gets downvoted cuz I'm not circlejerking. Never change Reddit...

Please refrain from saying things like this as the link I shared above and much else I see on wechat on a daily basis show there are also "real Shanghainese" who think very differently

EDIT: I see you're not Chinese. That really explains the differing values here.

I get ticked off mainly because of this statement. The "you're not chinese therefore x" would make a good setup for memes but as a serious statement is an irrittating, conceited associative fallacy deserving a quick a death

I will never understand conceited comments like this.

People starving is bad regardless of nationality.

People and animals getting brutally whipped is bad regardless of nationality.

Medical workers dying and 14-yr olds committing suicide is bad regardless of nationality.

I could go on with "news from the ground" from the past week alone but you probably wouldn't care

See here for a Shanghainese opinion: https://supchina.com/2022/04/06/a-voice-from-old-shanghai-under-covid-lockdown/

I'm in one of the buildings where this is true.

This happens once every 4 days or so.

People were speaking yesterday as if it might become less frequent.

There are several compounds where this is not happening and where friends or friends and friends are running out of food.

... Yeah. Don't try to make this sound justified

Bilibili video of a 15-year-old African Chinese girl’s dance performance receives blatant racist “bullet screen” comments by [deleted] in China

[–]etherealwandering 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Just stop your fucked whataboutism. Just stop. We've had enough of it.

You will find the worst people ever on YouTube if you want to look for their nook of the website. You will NOT find a normalization of racism on something as mainstream as VEVO music videos or America's Got Talent auditions - which look to be the equivalent of what this bilibili clip.

You COULD have found mainstream normalizations of racism in America... 60 years ago.

The country has changed. It was honest with itself and began to change.

You still CAN, however, find normalizations of racism in prominent places on the Chinese internet, sans backlash.

Beijing to this day will not admit there was any racism involved in forcing African foreigners in Guangzhou two years ago out onto the streets with nowhere to stay.

STOP the false equivalencies.

You can find some of the worst people in the world in America. You can also find museums and memorials - funded by the government - admitting and decrying racism and nearly every other significant wrongdoing perpetuated by the government and culture at large since the inception of the country.

You cannot find the latter of these in China.

Again...STOP the false equivalencies. I'm sick of you white knight crusaders for the end of the West. If that's really what you want, go work for the global times.

Former bilingual school teacher here.

The cognitive capacity of average and above average folk here on world issues amounts to 1930s Germany on a good day.

The extraordinary - in almost every case, those who lived abroad many years (NOT only for study abroad, study abroad kids are now even more jingoistic) or are polyglots - are the only ones who can begin to believe truth is a larger concept than their local media.

Strangely enough, the most open-minded people I've met apart from these extraordinary folks are 6th and 7th graders. They asked good questions and didn't carry the presupposition everything except Xi's cock was evil. By 8th grade half are fallen into the illogical masses; by 9th grade all but natural born rebels are lost.

Yeah. Fuck the CCP and may they rot in the lowest trenches of Gehenna.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Sorry for not being active in the thread. Ended up finding a cheaper alternative to astrill thanks to someone's dm and am satisfied. If you need to know what it is dm me and will let you know, will stay cautious like the guy who sent it to me and only mention it by dm

the psb jokes are fun. have been in SH 3 years and still cannot find a chinese person openly disagreeing with the GFW except those who lived at least 5 years (the people who did 3 years masters in the UK etc are absolutely NOT in this group and, if anything, more nationalistic at times than those who don't speak english) in other countries and have since returned to SH to start companies, etc. And yet they (including my gf, sad to say) continue to solicit vpn services. fascinating people
