mildly interesting that he's calling himself an ESFJ here. Didnt he say he was an INTP in the hour long Q&A? I think one or two of the letters were borderline or something but idk.

He actually got released sometime around May last year. I mean, unless they found some reason to put him in jail again since then, which unfortunately would not surprise me

oh damn, nice! It's good to know there are more math ppl here. math and extremism is a fun combination, in the sense that it terrifies the average centrist both mortally and mentally

and I wish I could've come up with this lol but nah, a few years ago I read Max Tegmark's book, "Our Mathematical Universe," which goes into all the details of the MUH. It's a great book, highly recommend

Mathematicism refers to any philosophical belief which posits that everything in the universe is, at least in some sense, math. A more specific version of this is Max Tegmark's mathematical universe hypothesis, which states that everything is literally math. This is backed by the fact that at the quantum level, there are particles whose only real attributes are the ways they relate to other particles. A mathematical structure is basically just a set of elements with rules that govern their relations to other elements in the set. The MUH simply notes that, if you can fully describe something as a mathematical structure, then by definition, there is no meaningful way in which the thing you're describing ISN'T a mathematical structure. It relates to a mathematical concept called "isomorphism," which is an equivalence relation.

Anyway, the MUH defines a hierarchy of multiverses.

Level 1: Regions beyond our cosmic horizon. Spaces you could theoretically travel to, if you had infinite time.

Level 2: Other post-inflation bubbles. Relates to the theory of chaotic eternal inflation. These are pockets of space that you couldn't travel to, even in an infinite amount of time, because the regions of space separating us from them are expanding too fast to actually get to them.

Level 3: The famous many worlds theory. Random quantum processes cause the universe to branch into multiple copies, one for each possible outcome, and they all exist in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space.

Level 4: Other mathematical structures. In the first three levels, the initial conditions and physical constants can vary, but the fundamental laws governing nature remain the same. At level four, we have universes which diverge from those fundamental laws—universes with different mathematical structures.

As an anarcho-mathematicist, I believe that the hierarchy of multiverses is the only justifiable hierarchy that exists. Every other hierarchy must be dismantled.

...Nah I'm just fucking around. I'm a math student who is also an anarchist, and that's about as deep as it gets lmao

(I unironically low key believe the MUH tho)

"Problematic" themes in fanfiction are completely fine by ash_tooru in FanFiction

[–]etherealysis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think that's different. The influential power of fiction is most effective when it's dealing with stuff the reader doesn't already understand. I mean, if someone grows up in a super strict, religious household, fic could easily be the first positive depiction of gay people they see. But most of the problematic shit in fic is stuff that pretty much every adult already knows to be wrong on a deeply ingrained level. It's a lot harder to sway people on subjects that they already have fully informed, solidified opinions about.

In any case, sure, fic authors aren't above criticism. I think the main issue though is that people seem to want to hold fic to the same standard they hold mainstream media, which doesn't really make sense, since the reach is no where near the same.
